Indices Edged Lower Friday Yet Posted Weekly Gains

For the week, the Dow was up 0.2%, the S&P added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq gained 0.2%.Stocks finished mostly lower on Friday. The Dow was down 37 points to 18576. The S&P 500 lost 1 point to 2184 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 4 points to 5232. The volume totals were lighter than the prior session on the NYSE but and slightly higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners narrowly led advancers on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 32 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 50 on the prior session. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.

Big gains for the major indices were noted in prior commentaries and that bullish action signaled a new "confirmed uptrend" for the market (M criteria). See the Featured Stocks Pagewhich now lists a few noteworthy candidates that have made headway.

The major averages pulled back from record highs on Friday as investors digested disappointing economic releases. Retail sales were unexpectedly unchanged in July, versus expectations of a 0.4% increase. In a separate release, producer prices fell 0.5% last month, below projections of a 0.1% gain. Finally, a University of Michigan preliminary report on consumer sentiment came in at 90.4, below analysts estimates of 91.5 reading.

Seven of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 finished lower on the session. Materials led the losses with shares of Nucor Corp (NUE -3.17%). Wynn Resorts (WYNN -2.83%) slid after being the subject of negative commentary. In the retail space, Nordstrom (JWN +8.03%) climbed after the department store posted a smaller-than-expected drop in per-share profit. J.C. Penney (JCP +6.14%) was higher to $10.55 as the retailer’s earnings loss was less than anticipated. In Tech, Nvidia (NVDA +5.59%) rose as the chipmaker reported its fastest quarterly sales growth in nearly five years.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 14/32 to yield 1.51%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 2.3% to $44.49/barrel. COMEX gold was down 0.5% to $1335.80/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.1%.

Tech Indices and Retail Index Edged Higher

The Bank Index ($BKX -0.46%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.38%) both edged lower while the Retail Index ($RLX +0.26%) posted a small gain on Friday. The tech sector was mostly positive as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.33%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.46%), and the Networking Index ($NWX +0.24%) each posted a modest gain. The Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.44%) eked out a modest gain while the Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.01%) and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.50%) both ended lower.
