Major Averages Fell With Higher Volume Totals
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished lower on Monday. The Dow was down 77 points to 18493. The S&P 500 lost 6 points to 2168 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 2 points to 5097. The benchmark S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both remain perched at record highs. Big gains for the major indices were noted in prior commentaries and that bullish action signaled a new "confirmed uptrend" for the market (M criteria). Volume totals were higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and 4-3 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 58 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 54 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is perched -2.6% off its record high hit last July.
The major averages pulled back from record highs last week as oil prices declined and investors weighed corporate earnings releases. On the data front, manufacturing activity in the Dallas Fed region stabilized in July after contracting the previous two months. In M&A news, Yahoo (YHOO -2.69%) fell after agreeing to sell its core internet operations to Verizon Communications (VZ -0.41%) for $4.8 billion in cash. Nine of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 finished lower on the session. Energy shares were the worst performers settling down 2% as crude prices declined. In earnings, Roper Technologies (ROP -5.76%) fell after the company lowered its full-year EPS guidance. Kimberly-Clark (KMB -1.52%) fell as the consumer products maker revised its organic growth outlook. Sprint (S +27.71%) rose as the telecommunications company added more wireless subscribers than expected in the quarter. Gilead Sciences (GILD +2.31%) rose ahead of its scheduled release. Treasuries declined along the curve with the benchmark 10-year note down 2/32 to yield 1.57%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude retreated 2.5% to $43.08/barrel. COMEX gold was down 0.5% to $1316.30/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.2%.

Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Retail Index ($RLX +0.32%) edged higher but the Bank Index ($BKX -0.24%), and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.43%) both created a drag on the major averages on Monday. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.39%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.55%) and Networking Index ($NWX +0.43%) posted unanimous gains. Meanwhile commodity-linked groups were clearly laggards as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.96%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.52%), and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -3.71%) each fell.
