Breadth Negative as Indices Endure More Distributional Pressure

Stocks declined on Tuesday. The Dow was off 190 points to 18041. The S&P 500 lost 21 points to 2104. The NASDAQ fell 56 points to 5032. The volume totals were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, signaling an increase in selling pressure coming from the institutional crowd. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by almost a 4-1 margin on the NYSE and by more than 3-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership contracted as there were only 14 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 38 stocks. New 52-week lows expanded and outnumbered new 52-week highs on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 4 of the 12 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, stocks are enduring distributional pressure again after making little headway following the bullish action on 5/14/15 which met the definition of a "follow-through day".  Investors still have a favorable market environment for buying stocks meeting all of the key fundamental and technical criteria, however, any sustained rally requires healthy leadership (more stocks hitting new 52-week highs).
Charts courtesy www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell with higher volume on Tuesday, slumping to its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

The major averages consolidated as economic data increased expectations of a 2015 interest rate hike. Both durable goods and capital goods posted notable improvements in April. While March home prices were softer than estimated, a similar gauge of April and a measure of April new home sales both topped projections. For May, consumer confidence beat estimates, but regional manufacturing gauges showed mixed results.

All 10 S&P 500 sectors were lower. Energy was down the most in sympathy with crude prices. Exxon Mobil (XOM -1.4%) and Chevron (CVX -1.5%) both fell. Apple (AAPL -2.2%) weighed on tech stocks. In material stocks, Alcoa (AA -1.4%) fell and Freeport McMoRan (FCX -4.3%) slumped. M&A helped limit losses. Time Warner Cable (TWC +7.3%) rose after receiving a $55 billion cash and stock takeover offer from Charter (CHTR +2.5%) which also advanced.

Treasuries climbed as their perceived safety outweighed expectations for higher rates. Amid a $26 billion auction, the two-year note was little changed to yield 0.61%. The benchmark 10-year Treasury advanced 22/32 to yield 2.13%.

Commodities were broadly lower on dollar strength. WTI crude slid 2.6% to $58.19/barrel and COMEX gold retreated 1.4% to $1187.20/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.9% with the euro off 0.9% to $1.0875/EUR and the yen 1.3% weaker to ¥123.10/USD.

Weak Commodity-Linked Groups Outpaced Retail, Financial, Tech Declines

The Retail Index ($RLX -0.91%) created a drag on the major averages on Tuesday along with weakness in financials as the Bank Index ($BKX -0.70%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.78%) both finished lower. The tech sector saw unanimous losses from the Networking Index ($NWX -1.09%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.85%), and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.76%). Commodity-linked groups were the worst performers as energy-related shares fell and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.72%) and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.88%) both sank, and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -3.59%) was a standout decliner.

Gains For News Highs Still Needed to Trigger Technical Buy Signal

Luxoft Holding Inc Cl A (LXFT -$0.94 or -1.78% to $51.91) finished lower after highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 4/23/15 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). Disciplined investors know that subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point for new highs (N criteria) are needed to trigger a proper technical buy signal.  It has made gradual progress following the previously noted "breakaway gap" on 2/12/15.

Sales revenues growth has been strong while it reported earnings +32%, +23%, +50%, and +28% in the Jun, Sep, Dec '14 and Mar '15 quarters versus the year ago periods. Its strong quarterly and annual earnings history (C and A criteria) matches the guidelines of the fact-based investment system.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 185 in Jun '14 to 254 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 30.2 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Important support is defined by its 50 DMA line ($65.24) where more damaging losses would raise greater concerns and trigger a technical sell signal.

G - Down and trading above average volume today while sputtering below its 50 DMA line. Relative Strength rating has slumped below the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. Technically, it broke out on 4/23/15 with a volume-driven gain for new highs, and healthy stocks rarely fall more than -7% below their pivot point in favorable market environments.

Completed a new Public Offering on 3/17/15. Reported earnings +34% on +16% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter, an improvement after Dec '14 earnings below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Y - Volume-totals have been cooling while holding its ground stubbornly near its 52-week high. Recent gains lacked volume after it found support near its 50 DMA line while building on a riskier "late-stage" base pattern. Gains backed by at least +40% above average volume while rallying above the pivot point may trigger a technical buy signal.

G - Still quietly consolidating near its 52-week high with volume-totals cooling. Reported earnings +5% on +16% sales revenues for the Mar '15 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), a fundamental flaw making it a less favorable buy candidate. Prior reports cautioned - "It did not produce gains above the pivot point backed by at least the +40% above average volume necessary to trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.
