Stocks Rally On Lighter Volume Following Latest Distribution Day

The major averages soared on the first trading day of the month after news broke that Greece will get a bailout. Lighter volume totals reported on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Friday's levels revealed a lack of substantial buying efforts from the influential institutional crowd. Advancers led decliners by more than a 3-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and nearly a 3-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs easily trumped new 52-week lows. There were only 18 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, lower than the 38 issues that appeared on the prior session. A healthy crop of new leaders making new highs bodes well for any market rally.

Over the weekend, news broke that the EU will spend $146 billion to bailout Greece. The news sent the EU plunging as fear spread that other EU nations will also need assistance. In the US, billionaire investor, Warren Buffett defended Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS +2.96%) at his annual shareholders meeting in Omaha. Last year, Buffett invested $5 billion in the investment bank and said the bank should not be blamed for losses on lousy mortgage bets.

Elsewhere, US manufacturing grew at the fastest pace since 2004 and personal income and spending also rose which helped lift stocks. Approximately +78% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported their Q1 results have topped estimates which bodes well for the economic recovery.

Tech, Retail, and Financial Indices Among Monday's Best Gainers

Tech shares were among the session's best gainers as the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +2.63%) outpaced the Networking Index ($NWX +1.90%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.85%), and Internet Index ($IIX +1.72%) with solid gains.  The Retail Index ($RLX +1.73%) and financial shares provided a positive influence for the major averages as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.68%) and Bank Index ($BKX +1.70%) finished with respectable gains.  Defensive areas were relatively sluggish as the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.28%) inched higher and energy-related shares had a positive bias that helped the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.47%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.68%) post modest losses.  Meanwhile, the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.37%) lagged most other groups while finishing Monday's session with a loss.

Sales Revenues And Earnings Showed Acceleration In Latest Quarter

Intuitive Surgical Inc. (ISRG +$11.16 or +3.23% to $372.22) has been consolidating quietly in a tight range near its pivot point while staying above its 50-day moving average (DMA). Subsequent violations of its recent chart low or 50-day moving average (DMA) line could raise more serious concerns and trigger sell signals.  It had suffered a technically damaging loss and an annotated graph was included under the 4/07/10 headline "Volume Surges Behind Damaging Losses" as it sank under its recent chart low ($338.52 on 3/26/10) and violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line triggering worrisome sell signals while volume increased to nearly twice its average daily trading total. The prompt repair of its 50 DMA line breach was a reassuring sign of support, and additional gains helped ISRG show enough resilience to be featured again in yellow in the 4/13/10 mid-day report (read here) with new pivot point cited based on its 3/03/10 high.

The latest comparison for the period ended March 31, 2010 showed a continuation of the very impressive acceleration in sales revenues and earnings growth. Its powerful rally to new high territory was an even more reassuring sign of institutional accumulation that provided the latest technical buy signal, however the heavy distribution on 4/16/10 and weakness below its prior chart highs raised more recent concerns. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares has risen from 282 in Jun '09 to 306 in Mar '10, which is reassuring concerning the investment system's I criteria.  Its annual earnings history (the A criteria) has been very impressive. Earlier notes had outlined technical deterioration before and when it was dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 6/10/08. ISRG traded up more than 13-fold since first featured in yellow in CANSLIM.net reports in the summer of 2004.

G - Quietly consolidating above its 50 DMA line. It was featured in the 4/23/10 mid-day report (read here) while encountering distributional pressure following strong results for the March 31, 2010 quarter. Stocks that are "healthy" do not drift more than -7% below their pivot point after a fresh buy signal. Pyramiding into positions and limiting losses are critical parts to success.

G - Holding its ground since a considerable gap up gain on 4/29/10 with more than twice its average volume after reporting great results for the quarter ended March 31, 2010. There was an impressive acceleration in sales revenues (+60%) and earnings (+144%). Its streak of 13 consecutive weekly gains leaves it extended from any sound base. Repeatedly noted - "could produce more climactic gains, especially due to the small supply (S criteria) of shares outstanding."

G - Promptly found support and rebounded today for a close back above its 50 DMA line. Its considerable loss on 4/28/10 with volume more than 2 times average raised concerns while testing support near prior chart highs.
