Major Averages Rose For Week While Ending on a Positive Note
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow and S&P 500 were both up +1.7%. The NASDAQ Composite gained +2.2%. Stocks ended the week on a positive note. Friday the Dow rose 99 points to 18,057. The S&P 500 gained 11 points to 2,102. The volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Advancers led decliners by 3-2 on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 52 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up a notch from the prior session total of 51 stocks. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 11 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages have seen less distributional pressure in recent weeks and there has remained a healthy level of leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The NASDAQ Composite was 21 points higher at 4,995, finishing -0.93% off its 2015 high.
New data released showed import prices dipped 0.3% in March versus a projected 0.4% decline. Industrials were the best performing sector on the session. General Electric (GE +10.8%) rallied after announcing the sale of most of its finance business and authorizing a $50 billion share buyback. Health care was higher to extend its winning to a sixth-straight day led by biotech. Abbvie (ABBV +2.79%) and Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN +2.99%) both rose.
Over in tech, Apple (AAPL +0.43%) inched higher as the company began accepting pre-orders for its new smartwatch. Software maker Citrix (CTXS -1.32%) fell after pre-announcing disappointing earnings.
Financials were the relative underperformer as insurers declined. Principal Financial (PFG -3.23%) and Genworth (GNW -2.03%) both were lower.
Treasuries were higher at the long end of the yield curve. Benchmark 10-year notes gained 2/32 to yield 1.95%. The 30-year bond rose 9/32 to yield 2.58%.

Rebound Above 50-Day Moving Average Helped Technical Stance
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Linkedin Corp (LNKD +$9.21 or +3.60% to $265.35) gapped up today, rebounding above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line, helping its technical stance improve. It found support while consolidating above prior highs in the $243 area. Its color code was changed to yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 2/26/15 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.
LNKD was last shown in this FSU section on 3/19/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Stalled Following 'Breakaway Gap' 6 Weeks Ago ". It has made no progress since the considerable "breakaway gap" noted in the 2/06/15 mid-day report (read here).
It reported earnings +56% on +44% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter. That marked its 3rd consecutive quarter with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), following sub par Dec '13 and Mar '14 earnings results. It has maintained a strong annual earnings (A criteria) history.
The high-ranked leader from the Internet - Content group's Return On Equity of 9% is still below the 17% guideline, which is a minor concern. Its Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.6 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Ownership by top-rated funds has been on the rise from 885 in Jun '14 to 1,116 in Mar '15, an encouraging sign concerning the I criteria.

G - Color code is changed to green after rising above its "max buy" level. A considerable "breakaway gap" for a new 52-week high was backed by 8 times average volume triggering a technical buy signal on the prior session. It was highlighted in yellow in the 4/09/15 mid-day report (read here). Reported Feb '15 quarterly earnings +74% on +15% sales revenues. Earnings increases were above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) in the 5 latest quarterly comparisons. Following a downturn and losses for FY '11 it has been showing better annual earnings (A criteria) growth. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and annotated graphs.
