Major Averages Rose But Small Caps Lagged

Stocks were higher on Thursday. The Dow rose 56 points to 17,958. The NASDAQ Composite advanced 24 points to 4,974. The volume totals were reported mixed, lighter on the NYSE and slightly higher on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Decliners narrowly outnumbered advancers on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.  Leadership improved as there were 51 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 45 stocks. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 6 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' endured recent distributional pressure which put the rally under pressure, however, their remains a healthy level of leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 index gained 9 points to 2,091, consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. It is perched only -1.34% off its all-time high.

The major averages finished in positive territory as a stronger dollar and oil prices countered investor caution surrounding corporate profits. On the economic front, weekly jobless claims rose by 14,000 to 281,000, essentially in line with consensus estimates. Wholesale inventories grew 0.3% in February, edging projections to tick up 0.2%.

Energy paced the advance rebounding from the previous day's oil induced retreat. Shares of Ensco (ESV +5.68%) and Halliburton (HAL +4.12%). Health care extended gains to a fifth day led by Express Scripts (ESRX +4.87%). Utilities were the worst performing sector on the session. PG&E (PCG -1.55%) fell after it was fined $1.6 billion by regulators for a gas pipeline explosion in 2010.

Shares of Alcoa (AA -3.37%) fell after the aluminum maker kicked off earnings season with a revenue shortfall. Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY -5.43%) fell following its profit miss and reduced guidance.

Treasuries extended losses following weak demand at the latest $13 billion 30-year bond sale. The long-dated maturity fell a point and 13/32 to yield 2.60%. Benchmark 10-year notes declined 15/32 to yield 1.96%.

In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude rose 0.2% to $50.54/barrel. COMEX gold slipped 0.8% to $1,193.60/ounce.

Breakaway Gap Backed With 8 Times Average Volume

Apogee Enterprises (APOG  +$4.14 or +9.07% to $49.78) was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2/26/15 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It gapped up today hitting new 52-week highs (N criteria), then finished the session well above its pivot point, clinching a technical buy signal with 8 times its average daily volume behind the big gain.

APOG reported Feb '15 quarterly earnings +74% on +15% sales revenues. Earnings increases were above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) in the 5 latest quarterly comparisons. Following a downturn and losses for FY '11 it has been showing better annual earnings (A criteria) growth. The Bldg- Constr Prds/Misc group has shown leadership (L criteria) and has a 93 Group Relative Strength Rating.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 272 in Jun '14 to 332 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.5 is also an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply of only 27.5 million shares (S criteria) in the publicly traded flat can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
