Major Averages Erased Gains to End Session Lower

Stocks erased gains in afternoon trading. The S&P 500 declined 9 points to 2,092. The NASDAQ lost 7 points to 4,988. The volume totals were reported near the prior session total on the NYSE and slightly higher on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Decliners led advancers by 3-2 on the NYSE and by a narrow margin on the Nasdaq exchange.  There were 58 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 52 stocks. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 6 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, the major averages have seen less distributional pressure in recent weeks and there has remained a healthy level of leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended near the session low as it fell 80 points to 17,977. It is -1.7% off its all-time high and up only +0.87% year-to-date..

The major averages retreated as indexes climbed towards all-time highs ahead of looming earnings announcements. At the close, nine of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 were in negative territory. Industrials were off the most. General Electric (GE -3.09%) pulled back after rallying +10.8% on Friday. In earnings, Commerce Bancshares (CBSH +1.38%) rose after reporting quarterly results this morning, but Pep Boys (PBY -0.10%) was quiet ahead of their earnings announcement. Major financials are expected to report, spurring JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM +0.60%). Netflix (NFLX +4.42%) limited losses in tech stocks.

Economic data showed the Treasury Departments deficit unexpectedly widened to $52.9 billion in March.

Breadth was negative on issues by 3-2 on the NYSE and 7-6 on the NASDAQ. NYSE composite volume totaled more than 2.8 billion shares.

Treasuries moved slightly higher. The benchmark 10-year note gained 5/32 to yield 1.93%. According to Bloomberg, there is a 50% probability that the Federal Reserve increases interest rates to 0.25% by the conclusion of their September meeting.

Commodities were mixed. WTI crude extended gains from Friday as it advanced 0.6% to $51.97/barrel. COMEX gold lost 0.4% to $1199.30/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar rose 0.3% with the euro down 0.3% to $1.0570/EUR and the yen 0.1% stronger to ¥120.13/USD.

Financials Rose, Tech Mixed, as Commodity-Linked Groups Fell

The tech sector was mixed as the Networking Index ($NWX +0.14%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.47%) both posted small gains while the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.64%) edged lower.  Financials had a positive influence on the major averages as the Bank Index ($BKX +2.19%) outpaced the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.22%). The Retail Index ($RLX -0.31%) edged lower.  Commodity-linked groups also created a drag as they fell on Monday, with the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.40%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.24%), and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.22%) unanimously losing ground.

Quietly Consolidating Above 50-Day Moving Average Line

Akamai Technologies Inc (AKAM -$0.11 or -0.15% to $71.34) has been holding its ground while volume totals have been cooling, a sign few investors have headed for the exit. It recently wedged into new 52-week high territory with gains lacking great volume conviction.  Now it is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($69.03) and recent lows in the $68 area defining near-term support to watch on pullbacks.

The high-ranked Internet - Network Solutions firm was last shown in this FSU section on 3/23/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Wedging Gains Have Followed Brief Consolidation". It was first highlighted in yellow with pivot point based on its 11/28/14 high plus 10 cents in the 2/13/15 mid-day report (read here).

It reported earnings +27% on +23% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter, and the 2 prior quarterly comparisons were very near the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been steady, and it has an 89 Earnings Per Share Rating. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 941 in Mar '14 to 1,089 in Mar '15, and its Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.9 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days (I criteria).

Color Codes Explained :
Y - Better candidates highlighted by our staff of experts.
G - Previously featured in past reports as yellow but may no longer be buyable under the guidelines.
