Breadth Positive and Volume Higher as Major Averages Rose
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks were higher on Wednesday. The S&P 500 gained 6 points to 2,081. The NASDAQ Composite climbed 41 points to 4,950. The volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals, a sign of better buying demand from the institutional crowd. Advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and an 9-5 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 45 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 36 stocks. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 11 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' endured recent distributional pressure which put the rally under pressure, however, their remains a healthy level of leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Dow rose 27 points to 17,902. It is consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
The major averages finished a choppy session in positive territory as investors weighed commentary from the Fed. The release of the minutes from the central bank’s March meeting showed policy makers were divided over the timing of increasing interest rates.
Corporate merger news and profits were also in focus. Royal Dutch Shell (RYDAF -4.5%) fell after announcing it would purchase BG Group (BRGYY +27.5%) for $70 billion. Health care was the best performing sector. Mylan (MYL +14.76%) rose after agreeing to acquire Perrigo Co Plc (PRGO +18.39%) for approximately $29 billion. Shares of Alcoa (AA +1.79%) rose ahead of its earnings results after the close to kick off first-quarter reporting season.
Energy was the worst performing group as oil fell sharply after a report showed inventories rose to a record level. Exxon (XOM -1.97%) and Chevron (CVX -1.73%) were both lower.
Treasuries pared losses following the release of the Fed minutes to finish modestly lower. The 10-year note was down 5/32 to yield 1.90% even with solid demand at the latest $21 billion auction of the benchmark security.
In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude dropped -5.7% to $50.90/barrel. COMEX gold retreated 0.6% to $1203.10/ounce.

Volume Driven Gain From Flat Base Triggered New Technical Buy Signal
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Qualys Inc (QLYS +$3.35 or +6.83% to $52.43) hit a new 52-week high (N criteria) with above average volume behind today's gap up and 5th consecutive gain triggering a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its color code was changed to yellow while rising from a new 5-week flat base with pivot point based on its 3/05/15 high plus 10 cents.
It was last shown in this FSU section on 3/20/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Consolidating Above Support at Prior Highs and 50-Day Moving Average", consolidating above prior highs in the $40-41 area and above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line which define important near-term support to watch.
It reported earnings +200% on +26% for the quarter ended December 31, 2014 versus the year ago period, marking its 4th consecutive quarterly comparison with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 152 in Mar '14 to 230 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days.
Its small supply of only 19 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to great volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The Computer Software - Security group has a 93 Group Relative Strength Rating, and leadership (L criteria) in the industry group is another favorable factor with respect to the fact-based investment system.
