Major Averages Erased Gains to Close Session Lower on Lighter Volume
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The major averages erased decent gains they held for most of Tuesday's session and slumped in the late-afternoon to finish slightly in the red. The Dow, which rose as many as 102 points, was down 5 at 17,875. The S&P 500 fell 4 points to 2,076. The volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Decliners led advancers by a 9-7 margin on the NYSE and an even narrower margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership contracted as there were 36 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 41 stocks. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 7 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' endured recent distributional pressure which put the rally under pressure, however, their remains a healthy level of leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The NASDAQ Composite declined 7 points to 4,910. It recently found support near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
The major averages closed lower attributed to investor caution ahead of the release of the Fed's March meeting minutes and start to first quarter earnings season on Wednesday. The market was higher for most of the session amid speculation the central bank may delay raising interest rates until later this year. On the economic front, job openings rose to its highest level since January 2001 while consumer credit expanded to a record $3.34 trillion in February.
Utilities and consumer discretionary were down the most on the session. Southern Company (SO -1.5%) and homebuilder D.R. Horton (DHI -2.4%) both fell. Health care and energy were the best performing sectors. Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN +3.2%) advanced to pace gains in biotech. Diamond Offshore (DO +2.8%) rose as oil advanced. In M&A news, FedEx (FDX +2.7%) rose following its $4.8 billion offer to buy European rival TNT Express.
Treasuries were mixed after a fresh $24 billion sale of three-year notes drew average demand. The 10-year note gained 2/32 to yield 1.89%.
In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude climbed +3.2% to $53.82/barrel. COMEX gold fell -0.8% to $1,209.50/ounce.

Fresh Breakout Again Had Look of Institutional Demand
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Epam Systems Inc (EPAM +$0.42 or +0.64% to $66.49) hit another new 52-week high and traded near its "max buy" level ($66.78) today. It broke out on the prior session with 5 times average volume while rallying above the pivot point triggering a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($57.27) defines near-term support to watch on pullbacks.
On 3/27/15 a new pivot point was cited based on its 2/27/15 high plus 10 cents, as a new base of sufficient length had formed following its appearance in the 3/18/15 FSU section with annotated graphs under the headline, "Hovering Near Highs Extended From Prior Base". The latest action again has the look of serious institutional buying demand, however, after quick gains it is almost too extended from the prior base to be considered buyable under the fact-based investment system's guidelines.
The high-ranked Computer - Tech Services firm reported Dec '14 earnings +29% on +28% sales revenues. Its 5 consecutive quarters with earnings above the +25% guideline makes it a solid match concerning the C criteria. Annual earnings growth (A criteria) has been strong. Its Relative Strength rating of 97 is now well above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. Its Relative Strength line (the jagged blue line) has also been hitting new all-time highs.
It completed Secondary Offerings 8/30/13 and 9/17/13. Its Up/Down Volume ratio of 2.5 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 254 in Dec '13 to 328 Dec '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 37.1 million shares (S criteria) in the pubic float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
