Major Averages Erased Early Gains to End Session Lower
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The major averages gave up modest early gains to end the session lower on Tuesday. The Dow declined 105 points to 18,011. The S&P 500 was down 13 points to 2,091. The NASDAQ Composite fell 16 points to 4,994. The volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals, a sign of distributional pressure. Decliners led advancers by an 8-7 margin on the NYSE and by a narrower margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 63 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 108 stocks. The list of new 52-week highs contracted yet still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for only 3 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' uptrend has been supported by a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. Recent expansion in leadership was an encouraging sign for the market outlook. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P Small Cap 600 Index is hitting new all-time highs with a recent streak of gains.
The major averages finished firmly in negative territory as investor attention remained on the Fed. In a speech in Sydney, Australia, San Francisco President John Williams said the central bank should begin discussing raising rates by midyear. On the economic front, reports showed consumer prices rose 0.2% and new home sales unexpectedly climbed 7.8% in February.
Tuesday's retreat was broad based with all 10 sectors down on the session. PG&E (PCG -1.89%) was lower while utilities and health care were the worst performing groups.. Biogen (BIIB -2.38%) was lower to extend its pullback to a second day. Financials also weighed on the market with J.P Morgan Chase & Co (JPM -1.11%) down. McCormick (MKC +2.62%) was a notable gainer after the spice maker posted earnings above projections. Netflix (NFLX +3.12%) rose following positive analyst comments on the shares.
Treasuries rose as this morning's inflation reading prompted speculation the Fed will delay raising interest rates this year. U.S. government debt also advanced amid strong demand at the latest $26 billion two-year note auction. Benchmark 10-year notes were up 13/32 to yield 1.87%.
In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude slipped 0.1% to $47.41/barrel. COMEX gold gained 0.5% to $1,193.30/ounce.

Financial, Tech, and Commodity-Linked Groups Fell
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Weakness in financial shares weighed on the major averages on Tuesday as the Bank Index ($BKX -0.91%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.62%) both suffered modest losses. The Retail Index ($RLX +0.05%) finished flat. Fundamental Concerns Raised by Weaker Earnings and Sales Increases
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. (VRX -$0.74% or -0.36% to $202.61) completed a new Public Offering on 3/17/15 while consolidating near its all-time high, very extended from any sound base. It completed an earlier Public Offering on 6/18/13. The upshot of such offerings is that the end result is typically an increase in the total number of institutional owners. Unfortunately, VRX's latest earnings for Dec '14 quarter raised fundamental concerns for fans of the fact-based investment system.
Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($178.90) defines the closest support to watch. The high-ranked Medical - Ethical Drugs firm was last shown in this FSU section on 3/03/15 with annotated daily and weekly graphs under the headline, "Extended From Sound Base; Earnings Below +25% Raised Concerns". It gapped up on 2/23/15 for a considerable volume-driven gain on news it will acquire Salix Pharmaceuticals (SLXP). Following that big gap up gain, however, on 2/24/15 VRX reported earnings for the Dec '14 quarter +20%. That was below the +25% minimum guideline of the fact-based system (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns.
It traded up as much as +42.8% since highlighted at $144.84 in yellow in the 1/05/15 mid-day report (read here) with an annotated weekly graph showing a new pivot point cited based on the 12/22/14 high while building a cup-with-handle base. Subsequent gains above the pivot point on 1/08/15 were backed by +71% above average volume triggering a new technical buy signal.
A downturn in FY '07 and '08 earnings (A criteria) was followed by a strong earnings rebound in recent years. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.6 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 1,056 in Mar '14 to 1,166 in Dec '14, a reassuring trend concerning the I criteria.
