Indices Ended Slightly Lower on Lighter Volume Totals
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished slightly lower on Monday. The Dow fell 11 points to 18,116. The S&P 500 lost 3 points to 2,104. The NASDAQ retreated 15 points to 5,010. The volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals which had been inflated by options expirations. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by nearly a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by an 8-7 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 108 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 150 stocks. The list of new 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for only 3 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' uptrend has been supported by a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. Recent expansion in leadership is an encouraging sign for the market outlook. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is consolidating -0.9% off its all-time high and above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. It found support at its 200 DMA line after sputtering through January.
The major averages toggled between gains and losses after all three nearly set record highs last week. Economic data today was light. A gauge of existing home sales for February was in line with expectations; however, a measure of national economic activity showed a surprising decline last month. Turning to the Fed, Vice Chair Fischer told investors that he expects a rate increase by the end of 2015.
At the close, six of the 10 S&P 500 sectors were in negative territory. Despite a lift in oil prices, energy stocks including Chevron (CVX -1%) and Schlumberger (SLB -0.5%) fell. In industrials, transportation shares also exhibited weakness. Union Pacific (UNP -4%). Consumer staples stocks were up the most, amid a falling dollar. Wal-Mart (WMT +0.1%) and Kimberley-Clark (KMB +0.5%) edged higher. In materials, Freeport McMoRan (FCX +5%) rallied on the heels of stronger copper prices.
Treasuries edged higher with the 10-year note up 6/32 to yield 1.91%.
Commodities were mostly higher. WTI crude gained +1.6% to $47.33/brl. and COMEX gold rose 0.4% to $1,189.80/oz. In FOREX, the dollar lost 0.9% with the euro up 1.2% to $1.0948/EUR and the yen 0.2% stronger to ¥119.76/USD.

Gold & Silver Index Rebounded More Amid Broader Group Weakness
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Biotechnology Index ($BTK -2.04%) led the tech sector's retreat while the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.95%) and Networking Index ($NWX -0.37%) both registered smaller losses. Modest losses for the Bank Index ($BKX -0.73%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.47%) added to the major averages' negative bias along with the Retail Index ($RLX -0.30%). The Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.32%) edged lower and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.08%) finished flat. Meanwhile, the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +2.22%) was a standout gainer.

Wedging Gains Have Followed Brief Consolidation
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Akamai Technologies Inc (AKAM +$0.27 or +0.37% to $73.14) recently wedged into new 52-week high territory with gains lacking great volume conviction. The high-ranked Internet - Network Solutions firm was last shown in this FSU section on 3/04/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Holding Ground Extended From Prior Base". Following its breakout and spurt of volume-driven gains it held its ground well above prior highs in the $65 area and its 50-day moving average (DMA) line defining important support to watch on pullbacks.
AKAM was first highlighted in yellow with pivot point based on its 11/28/14 high plus 10 cents in the 2/13/15 mid-day report (read here). Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above prior highs. It reported earnings +27% on +23% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter, and the 2 prior quarterly comparisons were very near the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been steady, and it has an 89 Earnings Per Share Rating. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 941 in Mar '14 to 1,095 in Dec '14, and its Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.7 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days (I criteria).
