Major Averages Encountered Heavier Distributional Pressure
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished firmly lower on Wednesday. The Dow lost 293 points to 17,718. The NASDAQ Composite dropped 118 points to close at 4,876. The volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals, a sign of increasing distributional pressure. Decliners led advancers by nearly a 3-1 margin on the NYSE and more than 4-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 36 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 63 stocks. The list of new 52-week highs contracted yet still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for only 1 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' uptrend has been supported by a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. However, coupled with distributional pressure this week leadership has contracted, putting the rally under pressure. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index declined 30 points to 2,061, and its big loss led to a close below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line again.
The major averages extended their losses to a third day amid a disappointing update on U.S. manufacturing. Before the open, the Commerce Department reported durable goods unexpectedly fell 1.4% in February.
Nine of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 were down on the session led by tech. Chipmakers paced the group's decline following cautious analyst comments on demand. Micron (MU -4.97%) and Intel (INTC -2.92%) were both lower. Biotech also weighed on the market as it extended its recent pullback with big losses for Biogen (BIIB -4.66%) and Celgene (CELG -4.22%) fell. Energy was the lone sector in positive territory. Chevron (CVX +1.41%) and Schlumberger (SLB +1.76%) rose as oil advanced. Kraft (KRFT +35.62%) was the best-performing stock in the S&P 500, surging after it agreed to be acquired by privately-held Heinz.
Treasuries declined as the latest five-year note auction drew tepid demand. The benchmark 10-year note was down 15/32 to yield 1.92%.
In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude gained 1.4% to $48.93/barrel as a weaker dollar countered an eleventh consecutive weekly increase in U.S. inventories. COMEX gold rose for a sixth straight day, edging up 0.3% to $1,195.40/ounce.

Energy Indexes Rose Amid Widespread Group Weakness
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Energy-related shares posted gains as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.27%) and the Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.61%) rose, but most groups fell on Wednesday. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -4.60%) and Biotechnology Index ($BTK -4.35%) led the tech sector's retreat while the Networking Index ($NWX -2.06%) suffered a smaller loss. The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -2.00%) and the Bank Index ($BKX -1.65%) both lost ground and added a negative influence on the major averages. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.52%) and Retail Index ($RLX -1.50%) rounded out the mostly negative session with additional losses.

Relative Strength Rating Falls While Testing 200-Day Average
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Illumina Inc (ILMN -$7.63 or -4.00% to $183.28) slumped further below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and near its 200 DMA line with a big loss today on above average volume. There was a "negative reversal" after touching a new 52-week high on 1/28/15, finishing with a loss on above average volume. This Medical - Research Equipment/Services firm was last shown in this FSU section on 3/05/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Found Support at 50-Day Moving Average Line But Relative Strength Has Slumped". Now its Relative Strength rating has slumped to 74, below the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates.
ILMN now faces resistance due to overhead supply up through the $213 level. It really has made no headway since highlighted in the 10/22/14 mid-day report (read here). Fundamentals remain strong as it reported earnings +93% on +32% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter, its 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Sequential quarterly comparisons show encouraging sales revenues and earnings acceleration. Its annual earnings (A criteria) growth history has improved steadily since a downturn in FY '09. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 877 in Dec '13 to 1,097 in Dec '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
