Indices Rebound With Lighter Volume, Finishing Down For The Week

For the week the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down -2.1%, the Nasdaq Composite Index lost -1.9%, and the S&P 500 Index fell -1.7%. Volume totals were lighter behind Friday's gains, which suggested that institutional investors were not aggressively accumulating stocks following distributional losses on heavier volume this week. Advancing issues beat decliners by 9-2 on the NYSE and by 4-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There was a total of 32 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from a total of 15 on the prior session. On the Featured Stocks Page there were gains from 19 of the 22 high-ranked market leaders.

The market was not bothered by a downward revision in fourth quarter gross domestic product. Growth was revised to 2.8% from a prior estimate of 3.2%. Meanwhile, a measure of consumer confidence beat forecasts. The University of Michigan's final reading of consumer sentiment for February rose to 77.5, a three-year high, topping analysts' expectations for 75.4. Despite today’s gains, the major indexes remain on track for their first weekly losses in a month.

Stocks gained after oil prices stabilized and closed near $98 per barrel, down from more than $103 on the prior session. Boeing Co (BA +2.18%) rallied after the Air Force awarded the company a $35 billion air tanker contract. Caterpillar Inc (CAT +1.42%) rose after reporting an increase in worldwide machinery sales in January. J.C. Penney Company Inc (JCP -6.54%) reported earnings that beat estimates, but the retailer's outlook for the current quarter was disappointing and it tumbled.

The damaging losses this week, coupled with waning leadership, put the latest rally for the major averages (M criteria) under pressure. Typically, 3 out of 4 stocks move in the same direction as the major averages. Investors should be mindful to protect hard-earned profits, limit losses, and stand ready to raise portfolio cash levels if more damaging losses occur. The Nasdaq Composite Index recently traded within -1% of its 2007 high. The S&P 600 Small Cap Index has recently traded less than -1% away from its all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (-12.7% at last week's close) and the S&P 500 Index (-14.8% at last week's close) remain further away from a complete recovery to new all-time highs.

Commodity-Linked and Technology Groups Led Broad Gains

The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.23%) and Bank Index ($BKX +1.40%) posted gains after 3 consecutive losses, and both influential indexes reassuringly managed to close the week above their respective 50-day moving average (DMA) lines. The Oil Services Index ($OSX +3.42%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.27%) posted gains, and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.81%) closed the week above its 50 DMA line for the first time since December. The Networking Index ($NWX +2.40%) and Semiconductor Index ($SOX +2.61%) led the tech sector higher as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.51%) and Internet Index ($IIX +0.99%) posted smaller gains. The Retail Index ($RLX +0.28%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.65%) also contributed to the major averages' positive bias on Friday.

Consolidating Above Support After Bout Of Distribution

Lululemon Athletica (LULU +$0.66 or +0.87% to $76.83) posted a small gain on light volume, halting its slide after 5 consecutive losses and some distributional pressure this week. Support near prior highs defines chart support just above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. Subsequent violations would trigger technical sell signals and prompt investors to lock in profits or at least limit losses on any later buys. Following its last appearance in this FSU section on 1/14/11 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Leader Hovering Near Highs Following +56% Rally In 3 Months", it continued consolidating. Then, a new pivot point was cited on 1/26/11, and it eventually broke out again with a big gain on heavy volume on 2/04/11 triggering a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.

Since this high-ranked Retail - Apparel/Shoes/Accessories firm was first featured in yellow at $47.66 in the October 8, 2010 mid-day report it has traded up as much as +78.9% in less than 5 months. The 4 latest quarterly comparisons showed strong sales revenues and impressive earnings increases (C criteria), and it maintained a good annual earnings history (A criteria) despite a patch of negative comparisons in early '09. The number of top-rated fund owning its shares fell from 261 in Sep '10 to 286 in Dec '10, which is a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
