Major Averages Overcame Weakness to End Higher

The major averages reversed an early decline to finish Thursday in positive territory. The volume totals were reported slightly higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by 5-2 on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Stocks hitting new 52-week highs still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 64 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 46 stocks. Thursday's session concluded with closing gains for 22 of the 28 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

The benchmark S&P 500 Index gained over 5 points to close at 1,363 and just shy of the 2011 high. Prompting the market higher was encouraging labor and housing data. Weekly filings for first time unemployment benefits remained at a four year low at 351,000. Meanwhile, a separate report showed home prices rose 0.7% in December, ahead of consensus projections of a 0.1% increase.

Financials and telecom stocks helped lead the market's advance. Principal Financial Group Inc (PFG +3.26%) rose after an analyst upgraded the stock. MetroPCS Communications Inc (PCS +13.8%) rallied after the wireless carrier posted profits ahead of expectations. Vivus Inc (VVUS +77.54%) blasted off after an FDA panel backed the company's weight-loss pill. Sears Holdings (SHLD +18.66%) spiked higher on news it plans to sell 11 stores and separate some businesses. Gains in tech were muted by Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ -6.53%) after the PC maker lowered its second quarter earnings outlook.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average recovered from a 56 point decline to finish the session up 46 points at 12,984. Weak starts followed by strong finishes are characteristic of sessions more commonly found in a bullish market (the M criteria) environment, whereas positive starts which reverse and finish with the indices in the red are more commonly seen in bearish market periods.

Financial, Tech, Retail, and Commodity-Linked Groups Rose

The Bank Index ($BKX +1.10%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +2.07%) were influential gainers, and a modest gain from the Retail Index ($RLX +0.46%) also helped to underpin the major averages' gains on Thursday. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.14%) and Internet Index ($IIX +0.37%) posted smaller gains while the Networking Index ($NWX +1.17%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +2.17%) led the tech sector higher. Meanwhile, the Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.89%) lagged and ended the session with a loss. Commodity-linked groups had a mildly positive bias as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.54%), Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.63%), and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.94%) posted gains.

PICTURED: The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +2.07%) is making more progress above prior chart highs. Improvement in the financial groups bodes well as a "leading indicator" for the broader market outlook, as longtime members and regular readers have seen repeatedly noted.

Favorable Characteristics in Another Transportation Issue

Often, when a leading stock is setting up to breakout of a solid base it is highlighted in CANSLIM.net's Mid-Day Breakouts Report. Sometimes stocks are highlighted shortly after a technical breakout, yet while the potential buy candidate may still be considered action-worthy. The most relevant factors are noted in the report which alerts prudent CANSLIM oriented investors to place the issue in their watch list. After doing any necessary backup research, the investor is prepared to act after the stock triggers a technical buy signal (breaks above its pivot point on more than +50% average turnover) but before it gets too extended from a sound base. In the event the stock fails to trigger a technical buy signal and its price declines then it will simply be removed from the watch list. Disciplined investors know to buy as near as possible to the pivot point and avoid chasing stocks after they have rallied more than +5% above their pivot point. It is crucial to always limit losses whenever any stock heads the wrong direction, and disciplined investors sell if a struggling stock ever falls more than -7% from their purchase price.

Echo Global Logistics (ECHO +$0.28 or +1.51% to $18.78) posted a small gain today with above average volume. It is perched at its all-time high after volume-driven gains last week into new high territory, as can be seen on the weekly graph annotated below. Leadership (L criteria) from at least one other high-ranked firm in the Transportation - Logistics group is reassuring although the group has a weak (25) Relative Strength Rating. Roadrunner Transportation Systems Inc (RRTS) is one of its strong peers from the group which was added to the Featured Stocks list on 2/10/12 and it has subsequently shown bullish action.

ECHO was added to the Featured Stocks list as it appeared in the 2/22/12 mid-day report (read here) highlighted in yellow with a pivot point cited based on its 7/06/11 high plus 10 cents as it was noted - ". Technically it broke out from a 32-week cup shaped base pattern already and may be forming a high handle. Its quarterly and annual earnings increases have been strong, satisfying the C and A criteria. Ownership by top-rated funds rose from 86 in Dec '10 to 130 in Dec '11, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria."
