Major Averages End Mixed Again

The major averages again ended mixed and little changed on Tuesday's session. The volume totals were reported lighter than the prior (options-expiration) session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange while decliners and advancers were evenly mixed on the NYSE. Stocks hitting new 52-week highs still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 65 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 95 stocks. Tuesday's session concluded with closing gains for 13 of the 27 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Early action saw the major averages advance after European leaders approved the 130 billion euro rescue package for Greece. The market pared gains amid concerns a second bailout may not keep Greece from defaulting on its debt.

Dow component Chevron (CVX +1.64%) finished higher in sympathy with oil's climb to a nine month high. However, crude's advance grounded airline stocks including U.S. Airways Group Inc (LCC -11.4%). Material stocks advanced including Alcoa Inc (AA +2.56%). Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT -3.86%) fell as lower prices hurt margins in the most recent quarter. Over in tech, Dell Inc (DELL +0.28%) held its ground ahead of its earnings release after the close.

The latest expansion in leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) has maintained and improved the current confirmed market uptrend. As this commentary has repeated, the M criteria requires a healthy crop of strong leaders for any sustained market advance. While the market has recently produced a larger crop of stocks hitting new highs, it always remains important for investors to be selective in choosing high-ranked buy candidates while being disciplined and following sound rules for buying and selling.

PICTURED: The media's talking heads paid much attention as the Dow Jones Industrial Average touched the psychologically important 13,000 level. Technically, what is more significant than 13,000 is that it has already rallied above its 2011 high. It is currently -8.7% off its October 2007 all-time high.

Longer-Term Look at Healthcare Group's Uptrend

The Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.29%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.31%) edged higher, and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +2.79%) was a standout gainer on Tuesday. The tech sector had a negative bias, led lower by the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -2.31%) and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.40%), followed by the Internet Index ($IIX -0.41%) and the Networking Index ($NWX -0.14%). The Bank Index ($BKX -0.11%) inched lower and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.22%) edged higher while the Retail Index ($RLX -0.06%) finished flat.

PICTURED: The Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.59%) ended modestly lower. In recent weeks it has rallied above prior highs, and it has tallied a year-to-date gain of more than +18%. The healthcare group is considered to be a "defensive" group which typically does better than other groups in times of economic uncertainty. Regardless of one's political stance, there is no doubt the US government is destined to remain the industry's biggest customer.

Volume Cool But Lack of Progress in Good Market Raises Concerns

Lululemon Athletica (LULU -$0.75 or -1.15% to $64.26) has been hovering near its all-time high. It has been stubbornly holding its ground with cooling volume totals in recent weeks, action suggesting that very few are exiting. No resistance remains due to overhead supply, but it is extended from the base pattern previously noted. Since its last appearance in this FSU section on 1/10/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Retail Apparel Firm Gapped Up For Considerable Volume-Driven Gain", it gradually wedged higher. Some may consider the tight weekly closes (seen on the weekly graph below) to be an advanced "3-weeks" tight pattern. Its lack of meaningful price progress in recent weeks is disconcerting, however, when poised to easily produce more climactic gains and while underpinned by a favorable market (M criteria) environment. If the quiet consolidation is followed by a clear burst of fresh buying demand from the institutional crowd, then action may be warranted by disciplined investors. As always, limit losses by selling if ever a stock fall more than -7% from your purchase price.

Its reported earnings +50% on +31% sales revenues for the quarter ended October 31, 2011 versus the year ago period. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 262 in Mar '11 to 467 in Dec '11, a good sign concerning the I criteria. The 8 latest quarterly comparisons showed strong sales revenues and impressive earnings increases (C criteria), and it maintained a good annual earnings history (A criteria) despite a patch of negative comparisons in early '09. LULU was first featured in yellow at $47.66 in the October 8, 2010 mid-day report report (read here) and it traded up as much as +163.7% in a little more than 9 months.
