Dow and S&P 500 Index Hit New Record Highs

For the week, the Dow advanced +0.7%, the S&P 500 notched a +0.6% gain and the NASDAQ climbed +1.3%. Stocks rallied on Friday as both the Dow and S&P reached new all-time highs. The Dow advanced 155 points to 18,141. The NASDAQ gained 30 points to 4,954. Volume totals for the session were reported higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, a sign of greater institutional buying demand. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by more than 2-1 on the NYSE, but by a narrower 7-6 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 89 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 85 stocks. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 13 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, ongoing gains for the major averages have established a confirmed uptrend with a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs.  New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 climbed 12 points to 2,110, finishing near the session high at a new record high.

The major averages rallied amid an accepted deal extending Greece's bailout by four months. The rollercoaster of news-flow sent the EUR/USD cross down as much as -0.8% advancing +0.3% and finally settling little changed at $1.1376/USD. Meanwhile, light economic data showed a stronger-than-expected increase in sentiment during February among manufacturers, construction and services firms.

Nine of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 finished higher. United Health (UNH +2.35%) gained and Health care was up the most on reports that commercial membership in the managed care market increased in the fourth quarter. Industrials also caught a lift from Boeing (BA +2.97%) which rose on the heels of a new contract with the U.S. Navy. Energy stocks were lower, and EOG (EOG -2.90%) fell after missing quarterly projections and lowering guidance.

Treasuries were volatile amid rate hike speculation and European deal news. The 10-year finished little changed at 2.12%. However, the 30-year gained 7/32 to yield 2.72%, after being up over a full point at mid-session.

Retail, Financial, and Techs Rose; Commodity-Linked Groups Fell

The Retail Index ($RLX +1.01%) was a positive influence on the major averages along with financials as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.63%) and the Bank Index ($BKX +0.93%) each posted a solid gain. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.35%) led the tech sector higher while the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.61%) posted a smaller gain and the Networking Index ($NWX +0.10%) finished flat. Commodity-linked groups lagged as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.54%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.17%), and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.18%) each lost ground.

Bullish Action While Tech Leader is Perched Near All-Time High

Facebook Inc (FB +$0.48 or +0.60% to $79.90) was highlighted in yellow while perched within close striking distance of its 52-week high in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It faces very little resistance due to overhead supply up through the $82 level. It rallied well above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with a big volume-driven gain on the prior session technically clearing a "double bottom" base. Convincing volume-driven gains into new all-time high territory could mark the beginning of another meaningful leg up for this high-ranked Internet - Content firm.

Its Relative Strength rating has improved to 81, just above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. It showed resilience since last shown in this FSU section on 1/30/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Weak Finish Below 50-Day Moving Average Line", while enduring distributional pressure. Waning leadership (L criteria) in the Internet - Content industry group was noted as a concern and the group still has a D rating. Bullish action from at least one other company in the group provides some reassurance.

The company reported earnings +69% on +49% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter. That marked its 7th consecutive quarterly comparison with earnings increasing well above the +25% minimum (C criteria). The high-ranked Internet - Content group leader has seen the number of top-rated funds owning its shares rise from 2,085 in Mar '14 to 2,557 in Dec '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Keep in mind that its large supply of 2.21 billion shares in the public float makes it an unlikely sprinter, especially as it is already well known by the institutional crowd and the general public.

G - Perched at its 52-week high today and its color code is changed to green after rising above its "max buy" level. Reported better than expected Dec '14 earnings and gave encouraging guidance, however the +23% earnings increase was below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) of then fact-based investment system. Recent low ($262.00 on 2/02/15) defines important near-term support below its 50 DMA line where violations would raise more serious concerns.
