Major Averages Ended Mixed Again
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks ended Monday's session mixed. The Dow lost 23 points to 18,116. The S&P 500 fell less than a point to 2,109. However, the NASDAQ gained 5 points to 4,960. Volume totals for the session were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 4-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange while the mix was near even on the NYSE. There were 91 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, versus the prior session total of 89 stocks. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 5 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, ongoing gains for the major averages have established a confirmed uptrend with a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index tallied its 9th consecutive gain.
After the Dow and S&P 500 set new all-time highs on Friday, the major averages took a breather. Trading was tepid as investors await the delivery of Greek fiscal reforms and Janet Yellen's semi-annual testimony to Congress Tuesday.
In economic data, a measure of existing home sales fell more than anticipated in January. Similarly, a measure of manufacturing in Dallas for February and a measure of Chicago-area manufacturing activity in January both disappointed expectations.
At the close, six of the 10 S&P 500 sectors were lower. Energy was a relative underperformer, as Exxon Mobil (XOM -1.01%). Utilities and health care stocks limited index losses. Weak economic data pushed utilities higher, as investors speculated on rate hike delays. Meanwhile, M&A activity lifted health stocks. Valeant (VRX +14.71%) rallied after agreeing to acquire Salix (SLXP -1.32%) for $158/share, less than estimated. Other M&A news helped Polypore (PPO +12.75%) surged after accepting a $3.2 billion acquisition bid.
Treasuries moved higher in afternoon trading. After being largely unchanged, the 10-year note climbed after mid-session by 15/32 to yield 2.06%.
In commodities, WTI crude fell -3.1% to $49.26/barrel following Friday's disappointing rig count decreases. Gold erased earlier losses, managing to finish only -0.3% lower to $1,200.30/ounce.

The Bank Index ($BKX -0.46%), Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.25%), and the Retail Index ($RLX -0.15%) each ended Monday's session with a small loss, creating a drag on the major averages. Reversed Into Red After Touching a New High
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Palo Alto Networks (PANW -$3.41 or -2.41% to $138.20) reversed into the red and ended near the session low today with a loss on higher volume indicative of distributional pressure. It is very extended from any sound base. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line defines near-term support where a violation may trigger a technical sell signal.
Disciplined investors avoid chasing extended stocks more the +5% above prior highs and they always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. The Computer Software - Security firm was last shown in this FSU section with annotated graphs on 1/28/15 under the headline, "Finished With a Loss and Near Session Low After Chance at Best-Ever Close".
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 246 in Jun '13 to 596 in Dec '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply (S criteria) of 66.9 million shares in the public float is another favorable characteristic. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.5 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days.
It recently reported earnings +88% on +50% sales revenues for the Oct '14 quarter. It has an Earnings Per Share (EPS) Rating of 80. Reviewing prior reports with annotated graphs carefully, it appears that the Apr '14 quarter now shows a -71% earnings comparison versus the year ago period. Previous annotated graphs published showed a more favorable comparison with strong sales revenues increases and earnings above the +25% minimum guideline satisfying the C criteria. It is unclear what prompted the apparent adjustment in the numbers as reported by the graph provider. Members are reminded that the fact-based investment system suggests waiting for the right time to buy, and only buying stocks showing strong quarterly and annual earnings (A criteria) increases.

G - Perched at its 52-week high today and its color code is changed to green after rising above its "max buy" level. Reported better than expected Dec '14 earnings and gave encouraging guidance, however the +23% earnings increase was below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) of then fact-based investment system. Recent low ($262.00 on 2/02/15) defines important near-term support below its 50 DMA line where violations would raise more serious concerns.
