Breadth Even as Major Averages Ended Session Mixed
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mixed on Thursday. The Dow was down 44 points to 17,985. The S&P 500 was 2 points lower at 2,097. The NASDAQ advanced 18 points to 4,924. Volume totals for the session were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was mixed with a slightly negative bias on the NYSE and a slightly positive bias on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 85 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 62 stocks. New 52-week highs expanded and easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 9 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, ongoing gains for the major averages have established a confirmed uptrend with a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P Mid-Cap 400 Index has recently wedged into new all-time high territory, with gains lacking great volume conviction. The move into new high ground looks much like the S&P 600 Small cap Index shown in the previous report (read here).
The major averages experienced a choppy session as investors monitored Greece’s attempt to renegotiate its loan agreement with Eurozone creditors. Stocks pared losses as oil rebounded from a decline below $50/barrel even after a report showed U.S. inventories rose more than expected. On the economic front, weekly jobless claims unexpectedly decreased to 283,000 from 304,000. Separate reports revealed manufacturing activity in the Fed's Philadelphia region slowed in February while an index of leading indicators increased +0.2% in January.
In earnings news, Priceline (PCLN +8.46%) as results topped consensus estimates. Wal-Mart (WMT -3.21%) following its reduced full-year forecast. Tech was the best performing on the session. Facebook (FB +3.53%) to contribute the most to the group’s advance. Utilities were the worst performing with Duke Energy (DUK -2.22%). In M&A news, Ball Corp (BLL -4.29%) fell after agreeing to buy U.K. rival Rexam Plc (REXMY +2.27%) for $6.8 billion.
Treasuries retreated amid speculation Fed Chair Janet Yellen may provide insight on interest rate policy during her Congressional testimony next week. Benchmark 10-year notes were down 10/32 to yield 2.12%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude finished off -1.7% to $51.24/barrel. COMEX gold rose +0.4% to $1,205.00/ounce.

Retail and Tech Gains Offset by Other Group Losses
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Retail Index ($RLX +0.61%) posted a modest gain and helped the major averages along with modest gains from the tech sector. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.26%), Networking Index ($NWX +0.27%), and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.54%) posted unanimous gains but each rose less than +1% on the session. The Bank Index ($BKX -0.17%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.07%) finished mixed and little changed. Commodity-linked groups fell as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -2.34%) was a standout decliner and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.94%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.23%) both lost ground.

Abrupt Pullback as Fundamental Concerns Were Raised
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
United Insurance Holding (UIHC -$3.02 or -11.86% to $22.44) violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and triggered a technical sell signal. Today's 2nd consecutive volume-driven loss was noted as action indicative of distributional pressure. It reported earnings +22% on +20% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns.
UIHC traded up as much as +30.63% since first highlighted in yellow at $20.64 with pivot point cited based on its 11/05/14 high plus 10 cents in the 12/05/14 mid-day report (read here). It was last shown in this FSU section on 1/29/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Extended After Tallying More Volume-Driven Gains".
Annual earnings (A criteria) have been strong. It completed a new Public Offering on 2/27/14. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 30 in Dec '13 to 174 in Dec '14. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.3 still hints that its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Still, disciplined investors might consider looking for a fresh buy candidate without flaws developing with respect to the fact-based investment system's guidelines.

G - Perched at its 52-week high today and its color code is changed to green after rising above its "max buy" level. Reported better than expected Dec '14 earnings and gave encouraging guidance, however the +23% earnings increase was below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) of then fact-based investment system. Recent low ($262.00 on 2/02/15) defines important near-term support below its 50 DMA line where violations would raise more serious concerns.
