Major Averages Inching Higher While Earnings Season Continues

The major averages finished with small gains while the small-cap indexes lagged. Volume totals on Thursday were reported mixed, slightly lower than the prior session on the NYSE and slightly higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers were narrowly outnumbered by decliners on the NYSE and decliners led advancers by about 7-6 on the Nasdaq exchange. Stocks hitting new 52-week highs still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 84 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 82 stocks. There were losses for only 7 of the 26 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Developments out of Europe and US economic data helped boost optimism. In Greece, lawmakers announced that a deal has been struck to obtain bailout funding for the indebted nation. Separately, the ECB held rates at 1%, but announced they will allow European banks to use a wider variety of asset as collateral for loans. On the economic front, weekly jobless claims came in better-than-expected. Individuals who filed for unemployment benefits came in at 358,000, beating consensus expectations of 370,000. In a separate report, December wholesale inventories rose +1%.

Tech stocks were leading sector gainers. Taleo Corp (TLEO +17.21%) was up after the company announced they were being acquired by Oracle Corp (ORCL +0.56%) for $46 per share. On the earnings front, Shares of Lorillard, Inc (LO +9.71%) gained after posting positive earnings. Visa Inc (V +3.76%) gapped up and rallied to new all-time highs following their better-than-expected quarterly results last night. Akamai Technologies Inc (AKAM +10.51%) advanced after topping analysts expectations in their quarterly earnings. Daily-deal website Groupon (GRPN -13.87%) fell after the company reported an unexpected loss in fourth-quarter earnings. Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO -2.10%) ended in the red after the company reported quarterly earnings following the prior close. Beverage maker Pepsico Inc (PEP -3.70%) fell after posting results.

The latest expansion in leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) has maintained and improved the current confirmed market uptrend. As this commentary has repeated, the M criteria requires a healthy crop of strong leaders for any sustained market advance. While the market has recently produced a larger crop of stocks hitting new highs, it always remains important for investors to be selective in choosing high-ranked buy candidates while being disciplined and following sound rules for buying and selling.

Tech Sector Mixed; Other Groups Indecisive

The Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.86%) and Networking Index ($NWX -0.68%) lost ground, meanwhile, other tech areas rose including the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.33%) and the Internet Index ($IIX +0.63%). Most other groups were little changed as investors were indecisive. In commodity-linked areas, the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.32%) edged lower and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.12%) finished with a smaller loss, yet the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.27%) edged higher. The Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.14%) and Retail Index ($RLX +0.16%) each had a slightly positive drift and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.22%) also posted a small gain, meanwhile the Bank Index ($BKX -0.27%) ended with a small loss.

Remaining Well Above 50-Day Average Since Early November Breakout

H M S Holdings Corp's (HMSY +$0.05 or +0.15% to $33.96) volume totals have been cooling in recent weeks while hovering near its all-time high. No resistance remains to hinder its progress, but it is extended from its prior base pattern. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and prior highs near $32 define near-term chart support to watch. Its last appearance in this FSU section was on 12/28/11 with an annotated graph under the headline, "No Resistance Remains But Now Extended From Prior Base Pattern." None of its subsequent gains have been backed by above average volume, yet it is also true that no losses have been marked by above average volume.

It is due to report earnings on the morning of February 17, 2012 for the latest quarter ended December 31, 2011 versus the year ago period. Volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. This Commercial Services - Healthcare firm has maintained a solid sales revenues and earnings growth history that still satisfies the C and A criteria. It reported earnings +31% on +15% sales revenues for the quarter ended September 30, 2011 versus the year ago period. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares has risen from 432 in Dec '10 to 485 in Dec '11, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. It has stayed well above its 50 DMA line throughout its ongoing rally since 11/07/11 when it confirmed a technical buy signal with a solid volume-driven gain into new high territory.
