Indices Overcame Mid-Day Weakness to Finish Higher Again

The major averages rebounded from mid-day losses to finish the session with small gains. The volume totals on Wednesday were reported slightly higher than the prior session on both the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth on the exchanges was positive with advancers leading decliners by about a 5-3 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Stocks hitting new 52-week highs still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges and new lows remained in the single digits. There were 82 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 57 stocks. There were gains for 13 of the 26 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Investors remain concerned about developments out of Europe. Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos and party leaders were in talks aimed at reaching an agreement on budget cuts. On the US economic front, weekly mortgage applications moved higher for the first time in three weeks with an increase of +7.5% in the period ended February 3rd. Crude oil closed off of its highs after a rise in inventories showed a weakening in demand.

On the earnings front, Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD +17.10%) rallied after the company's earnings topped analysts' expectations. Shares of Western Union Co (WU -10.0%) fell after the company revised their 2012 earnings expectations below analysts' projections. In other news, Caesars Entertainment Corp (CZR +71%) was up considerably following the company's IPO of 1.8 million shares. Bank of America Corp (BAC +3.57%) rallied for its highest close since September 2011.

The latest expansion in leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) has maintained and improved the current confirmed market uptrend. As this commentary has repeated, the M criteria requires a healthy crop of strong leaders for any sustained market advance. While the market has recently produced a larger crop of stocks hitting new highs, it always remains important for investors to be selective in choosing high-ranked buy candidates while being disciplined and following sound rules for buying and selling.

Tech, Bank, and Healthcare Index Posted Gains

Energy-related shares edged lower and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.45%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.23%) finished with small losses. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.17%) inched lower, and the Retail Index ($RLX -0.07%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.07%) also hugged the flat line. The Bank Index ($BKX +1.19%) and the Healthcare Index ($HMO +1.22%) posted influential gains. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.25%) led the tech sector higher, followed by smaller gains from the Networking Index ($NWX +0.37%) and the Internet Index ($IIX +0.49%), meanwhile the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.84%) pulled back.

Set-Up Near Prior Highs After 13-Week Cup Shaped Base

Often, when a leading stock is setting up to breakout of a solid base it is highlighted in CANSLIM.net's Mid-Day Breakouts Report. The most relevant factors are noted in the report which allows prudent CANSLIM oriented investors to place the issue in their watch list. After doing any necessary backup research, the investor is prepared to act if and when the stock triggers a technical buy signal (breaks above its pivot point on more than +50% average turnover). In the event the stock fails to trigger a technical buy signal and its price declines then it will simply be removed from the watch list. In other cases, stocks may be featured in CANSLIM.net's Mid-Day Breakouts Report.after recent action already triggered technical buy signal. Disciplined investors know to buy as near as possible to the pivot point and avoid chasing stocks after they have rallied more than +5% above their pivot point. It is crucial to always limit losses whenever any stock heads the wrong direction, and disciplined investors sell if a struggling stock ever falls more than -7% from their purchase price.

Randgold Resources Adr (GOLD -$0.04 or -0.03% to $114.56) was featured in yellow in yesterday's mid-day report (read here) with a pivot point based on its 52-week high plus 10 cents after a 13-week cup shaped base. Subsequent volume-driven gains into new high territory may trigger a technical buy signal. This UK-headquartered firm in the Mining - Gold/Silver/Gems group showed very strong sales revenues and earnings increases in the Mar, Jun, Sep, and Dec '11 quarterly comparisons much greater than the +25% minimum guideline following sub par Dec '10 quarterly results. Annual earnings (A criteria) history improved since a downturn in FY '08. It has seen an increase in the number of top-rated funds owning its shares, rising from 247 in Sep '11 to 290 in Dec '11, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The Mining - Gold/Silver/Gems group currently has a rather poor Group Relative Strength rating of E, however there is reassuring leadership from a couple of other high-ranked stocks in the group helping to satisfy the L criteria.
