Major Indices Rose on Shortened Pre-Christmas Session
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The S&P 500 logged a 1.1% gain, the Dow Jones Industrial Average registered a 0.9% gain, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.4%.The volume totals on the shortened session were lower than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by more than a 3-1 margin at the NYSE and bu more than 2-1 at the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership remained thin as there were 5 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 3 on the prior session. New 52-week lows outnumbered new 52-week highs on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices' uptrend has come under pressure (M criteria). Disciplined investors know that new buying efforts are only to be made in stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is consolidating after rebounding above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and perched near its all-time high.
Buying was broad based, leading 25 of the 30 Dow components to close higher and all 11 S&P 500 sectors to finish in the green. The consumer discretionary sector logged the biggest gain by a decent margin, jumping +2.6% thanks to Tesla (TSLA +7.4%) and otther mega-caps. Amazon.com (AMZN +1.8%). Apple (AAPL +1.2%), Microsoft (MSFT +0.9%), NVIDIA (NVDA +0.4%), and Broadcom (AVGO +3.2%) helped propel the information technology sector to a +1.0% gain. American Airlines (AAL +0.6%) temporarily grounded all flights due to a technical issue. The S&P 500 industrial sector (+0.8%) rose as Delta Air Lines (DAL +1.7%) and United Airlines (UAL +1.7%) were among the strong components.
Treasury yields moved lower after a fresh $70 billion 5-yr note sale met strong demand. There was no US economic data of note. Markets are closed on Wednesday for Christmas. Looking ahead to Thursday, the weekly jobless claims report is due at 8:30 ET.
