Major Averages Remain Near Record Highs
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher on Monday. The Dow was up 39 points to 19883. The S&P 500 added 4 points to 2262 and the Nasdaq Composite 20 points to 5457. Volume totals were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, as the prior session totals had been boosted by options expirations. Advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 45 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 48 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average has been encountering distributional pressure as indicated by recent losses on higher volume after challenging the psychologically important 20,000 level.
While remaining near record high territory the major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages advanced on the session Monday as the post-election rally continued and investors digested commentary from Fed Chair Janet Yellen. In prepared remarks, Yellen said the U.S. has the strongest jobs market in nearly a decade amid accelerating wage growth and a low layoff rate. She stated that recent economic gains have raised living standards for most Americans. On the data front, Markit’s survey of U.S. business activity expanded to 53.4 in December.
Eight of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in positive territory. Telecom stocks paced the gains with Verizon VZ +1.22%) gaining. Industrials outperformed with United Technologies (UTX +2.12%) rising after being the subject of positive analyst commentary. In M&A news, Mosaic (MOS -6.06%) fell as the company purchased the fertilizer business of Vale SA (VALE -5.51%) for $2.5 billion. Allied World Assurance (AWH +13.09%) rose after agreeing to a $4.9 billion takeover bid from Fairfax Financial (FRFHF -2.07%). In earnings, Lennar Corp (LEN -0.05%) was little changed despite the homebuilder reporting better-than-expected quarterly profit.
Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 15/32 to yield 2.53%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.5% to $52.12/barrel. COMEX gold gained 0.5% to $1140.50/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.2%.

Breakaway Gap Technically Clears 11-Week V Shaped Base
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
BioTelemetry Inc (BEAT +$2.00 or +9.43% to $23.20) was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 10/05/16 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It finished strong with +350% above average volume behind its gain after gapping up today, hitting a new 52-week high (N criteria). It rose from an 11-week "V shaped pattern, which is not as ideal as a more orderly base pattern. It found prompt support near its 200-day moving average (DMA) line, a reassuring sign that institutional owners stepped up near that long-term average.
It has the highest possible Earnings Per Share Rating of 99, well above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. Its quarterly and annual earnings history is a good match with the C and A criteria. Earnings per share rose +200%, +233%, +67%, and +62% in the Dec '15, Mar, Jun and Sep '16 quarters, respectively. During that same span the sales revenues increases were +7%, +12%, +18%, and +22%, showing encouraging acceleration.
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 194 in Dec '15 to 259 in Sep '16.Increasing ownership by top-rated funds is a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria, and it has a small supply (S criteria) of only 28.2 million shares outstanding. Disciplined investors know to never chase stocks and buy them more than +5% above prior highs, and to preserve capital they always sell any stock that falls more than -8% from their purchase price.
