Stocks finished higher on Monday. The Dow was up 59 points to 18635. The S&P 500 added 6 points to 2190 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 29 points to 5262. The volume totals were higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by nearly 2-1 on the NYSE and by more than 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 63 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 32 on the prior session. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index powered to a new record high.
Big gains for the major indices were noted in prior commentaries and that bullish action signaled a new "confirmed uptrend" for the market (M criteria). See the Featured Stocks Pagewhich now lists a few noteworthy candidates that have made headway. The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all closed at record highs on Monday as crude extended its recent rally and investors digested increased deal activity. NYMEX WTI crude climbed 3% to $45.84/barrel, after finishing its best week since April on Friday. On the data front, a report showed manufacturing activity in the New York Fed region contracted in August. In a separate release, the NAHB survey revealed homebuilder sentiment rose this month. Seven of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 finished positive on the session. Materials outperformed while Utilities lagged. In M&A news, Post Properties (PPS +9.42%) after agreeing to a $3.88 billion takeover bid from Mid-America Apartment Communities (MAA -4.89%). Xylem (XYL +3.86%) rose with news the company is acquiring privately held Sensus (SRTS +0.77%) for $1.7 billion in cash. Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX +6.70%) rose after being the subject of positive analyst commentary. On the earnings front, Sysco (SYY -0.06%) despite the food distributor’s quarterly profit beating Wall Street expectations. Salesforce.com (CRM -3.32%) was a notable decliner. Treasuries finished lower with the benchmark 10-year note down 12/32 to yield 1.55%. In commodities, COMEX gold was up 0.3% to $1340.30/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.1%.
