Tech-Heavy Nasdaq Composite Index Finished at New Record High
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks advanced on Thursday. The Dow rose 20 points to 18,058. The S&P 500 gained 4 points to 2,112. The volume totals were reported higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Advancers led decliners by a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 53 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 42 stocks. New 52-week highs expanded and easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 9 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages have overcome recent distributional pressure and leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) has remained healthy, helping the rally continue. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index rose 20 points to finish at 5,056, new 2015 and record all-time high closes.
The major averages advanced as strong corporate earnings contended with weak economic data. Manufacturing data in China and the Eurozone disappointed analysts. Domestically, new home sales slumped in March from a seven-year high, and jobless claims last week rose 1,000 to 295,000.
Eight of the 10 S&P 500 sectors finished in positive territory. Telecom was up the most. AT&T (T +4.17%) rallied as the company topped quarterly expectations. eBay (EBAY +3.77%) provided a tailwind as the company advanced on positive earnings and increased forward guidance. Chevron (CVX +0.43%) edged higher as energy was another notable gainer. Freeport McMoRan (FCX -2.43%) fell after the copper producer reported quarterly results that were damped by low metals prices.
Treasuries snapped a three-day losing streak on weak data. The benchmark 10-year note gained 10/32 to yield 1.94%.
Commodities were mostly higher. WTI crude rallied +2.4% to $57.48/barrel as Saudi Arabia restarted airstrikes in Yemen. COMEX gold rose 0.6% to $1,193.80/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar ebbed 0.6% with the euro up 1% to $1.0830/EUR and the yen 0.3% stronger to ¥119.51/USD.

Finding Support at 50-Day Moving Average
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Reis Inc (REIS +$0.02 or +0.08% to $25.49) has been testing support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($25.36). Little resistance remains due to overhead supply. Members were repeatedly reminded - "Gains above the pivot point must have at least +40% above average volume to trigger a convincing technical buy signal."
REIS was last shown in this FSU section with annotated graphs on 4/02/15 under the headline, "Encountered Distributional Pressure Following Breakout Lacking Volume". Action was noted as distributional pressure as it suffered a big loss on 5 times average volume on 3/31/15. It hit a new 52-week high and rallied above its pivot point on the prior session, but the volume was only +28% above average. Members were reminded - "Gains above the pivot point must have at least +40% above average volume to trigger a convincing technical buy signal." Pyramiding is a tactic taught in the Certification that allows investors to let market action help to dictate entries and weighting into each new position purchased.
On 3/16/15 it was highlighted in yellow in the mid-day (read here). It had earnings increases above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) and sales revenues improving in the Mar, Jun, Sep, and Dec '14 quarterly comparisons. Annual earnings (A criteria) history has been improving steadily since FY '10.
The high-ranked Real Estate Development/Operations firm has an Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.2 which is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 117 in Mar '14 to 152 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
