Major Averages Continue Rally With Healthy Leadership
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher on Wednesday. The Dow gained 89 points to 18,038. The S&P 500 rose 11 points to 2,107. The NASDAQ Composite advanced 21 points to 5,035. The volume totals were reported mixed, higher than the prior session on the NYSE and lower on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and 7-6 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 42 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 47 stocks. New 52-week highs expanded and easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 8 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages have recently encountered distributional pressure and leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) has waned, putting the rally under pressure. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index has been finding support near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and it remains perched within close striking distance of all-time highs.
The major averages closed firmly in positive territory as investors digested a busy day of corporate earnings releases. Coca-Cola rose 1.3% to $41.31 as profits topped estimates. McDonald's (MCD +3.13%) after saying it will unveil its turnaround plan next month. Boeing fell 1.4% to $151.19 as revenues came in slightly below projections. Chipotle (CMG -7.41%) after sales missed forecasts.
On the economic front, existing home sales rose +6.1% in March, above consensus expectations for a +3.1% increase.
All 10 sectors in the S&P 500 were up on the session. Tech was the best performing group. Chipmaker Broadcom (BRCM +5%) as earnings exceeded analyst expectations. Visa (V +4.07%) and MasterCard (MA +3.91%) after the Chinese government said it will end its monopoly on clearing bank card transactions. Newmont Mining (NEM -3.15%) was a notable decliner, as gold retreated.
Treasuries fell for a third-straight day. The 10-year lost 21/32 to yield 1.98% attributed to the encouraging housing data prompting speculation of Fed tightening.
In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude slipped 0.6% to $56.29/barrel after weekly U.S. inventories rose more than expected. COMEX gold declined 1.4% to $1185.60/ounce amid a stronger dollar.

Still at 50-Day Moving Average Line But Fundamental Concerns Remain
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Actavis plc (ACT +$0.69 or +0.40% to $295.22) has been finding support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. Subsequent losses leading to a damaging violation of the 50 DMA line and recent lows would raise more serious concerns and trigger technical sell signals.
It completed a new Public Offering on 2/25/15. Concerns were raised after it reported Dec '14 earnings +23%, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) of the fact-based investment system. ACT was last shown in this FSU section on 4/01/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Pullback With Higher Volume Toward 50-Day Moving Average". The Medical - Generic Drugs industry group currently has a 99 Group Relative Strength Rating. Leadership from other issues in the group is a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria.
ACT was first highlighted in yellow in the 6/20/14 mid-day report (read here). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares has been on the rise, up from 1,219 in Sep '13 to 2,062 in Mar '15, and its Up/Down Volume ratio of 1.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days, reassuring signs concerning the I criteria.
