Leadership Expanded as Major Averages Ended Mixed Session
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks were mixed on Tuesday’s session. The Dow fell 85 points to 17,949. The S&P 500 slipped 3 points to 2,097. The NASDAQ Composite was 20 points higher at 5,014. The volume totals were reported higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Advancers narrowly led decliners on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 47 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 22 stocks. New 52-week highs expanded and easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 11 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages have recently encountered distributional pressure and leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) has waned, putting the rally under pressure. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
The major averages ended a choppy session mostly lower as investors digested a busy day of corporate profit releases. Travelers (TRV -4.01%) and DuPont (DD -2.95%) to contribute the most to the Dow's decline after both posted disappointing earnings. Shares of Kimberly-Clark (KMB +5.39%) as quarterly results topped consensus estimates.
Seven of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in negative territory. Edison International (EIX -1.87%) fell as utilities and energy were down the most on the session. Transocean dropped (RIG -5.49%) as oil declined. Health care was the best performing following more M&A news from the group. Mylan (MYL +8.85%) rose after Teva Pharmaceuticals (TEVA +1.37%) offered to purchase its rival for more than $40 billion.
Treasuries were weaker as investors weighed the possibility of a Greek debt default against speculation of the Fed raising interest rates. Benchmark 10-year notes were down 6/32 to yield 1.91%.
In commodities, NYMEX crude retreated 2% to $55.26/barrel ahead of Wednesday's U.S. weekly inventory report. COMEX gold rose 0.8% to $1,202.90/ounce amid the uncertainty over Greece and a weaker dollar.

Rebounded Above "Max Buy" Level After Pullback Near 50 Day Average
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Facebook Inc (FB +$0.53 or +0.64% to $83.62) has rebounded back above its "max buy" level after consolidating near support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($80.25). Its Relative Strength rating is right at the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. It was last shown in this FSU section on 3/31/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Pullback Near Previously Stubborn Resistance". It found support near previously stubborn resistance in the $81-82 area. A subsequent violation would raise concerns an trigger a technical sell signal.
It was highlighted in yellow while perched within close striking distance of its 52-week high in the 2/20/15 mid-day report (read here). With no resistance due to overhead supply it was noted - "Convincing volume-driven gains into new all-time high territory could mark the beginning of another meaningful leg up for this high-ranked Internet - Content firm."
Waning leadership (L criteria) in the Internet - Content industry group was noted as a concern and the group has a C- rating. Bullish action from at least one other company in the group provides some reassurance. The company reported earnings +69% on +49% sales revenues for the Dec '14 quarter. That marked its 7th consecutive quarterly comparison with earnings increasing well above the +25% minimum (C criteria).
Is current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The high-ranked Internet - Content group leader has seen the number of top-rated funds owning its shares rise from 2,085 in Mar '14 to 2,584 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Keep in mind that its large supply of 2.21 billion shares in the public float makes it an unlikely sprinter, especially as it is already well known by the institutional crowd and the general public.
