Breadth Positive as Major Averages Rose With Less Volume Conviction
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks rallied on Monday’s session. The Dow rose 209 points to 18034. The S&P 500 gained 19 points to 2,100. The NASDAQ Composite was 63 points higher at 4,994. The volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals, after Friday's totals were inflated by options expirations. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by more than a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 22 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 3 stocks. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 11 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages have recently encountered distributional pressure and leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) has waned, putting the rally under pressure. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index found support again near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
The major averages rebounded from Friday's retreat after China's central bank announced a larger-than-expected cut to its reserve requirement for lenders. Markets also advanced following a round of encouraging corporate earnings releases. Toymaker Hasbro (HAS +12.55%) rallied after posting results above analyst estimates. Shares of Morgan Stanley (MS +0.57%) edged higher as its profits exceeded consensus projections. Royal Caribbean (RCL -8.00%) shares sank after the cruise ship operator lowered its full-year forecast.
All 10 sectors in the S&P 500 finished firmly in positive territory. Tech was the best performing group on the session with Microsoft (MSFT +3.10%) and Apple (AAPL +2.28%) both rising. Utilities also paced the advance with Exelon (EXC +2.03%) higher. Railroad operators led the industrial's advance with CSX (CSX +4.77%) and Kansas City Southern (KSU +2.76%) both chugging higher.
Treasuries were down attributed to China easing monetary policy. The benchmark 10-year was down 5/32 to yield 1.88%. The 30-year bond fell 22/32 to yield 2.55%.
In commodity trading, NYMEX WTI crude added 1% to $56.29/barrel amid speculation inventory growth may be slowing. COMEX gold fell 0.8% to $1,193.50/ounce amid today’s equity market rally and dollar strength.

Retail, Financial, Semiconductor and Networking Indexes Rose
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Retail Index ($RLX +1.21%) was a positive influence on the major averages on Monday and financials also added to the bullish bias as the Bank Index ($BKX +0.40%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.67%) both posted modest gains. The Networking Index ($NWX +1.18%) led the tech sector while the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.89%) followed with a solid gain but the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.13%) finished flat. Commodity-linked groups were quiet as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.13%), Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.17%), and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.35%) edged higher.

Perched at All-Time High, Extended From Prior Base
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Ambarella Corporation's (AMBA +$1.72 or +2.36% to $74.56) volume totals have cooled in recent weeks while stubbornly holding its ground near its all-time high. It has not formed a sound base of sufficient length. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($65.91) and recent low ($64.55 on 3/26/15) define important near term support to watch on pullbacks.
The high-ranked Electronics - Semiconductor firm was last shown in this FSU section on 3/30/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Getting Extended After Brief Pullback". Members were reminded - "Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above their prior highs."
On 3/02/15 a new pivot point was cited based on its 1/13/15 high plus 10 cents. On 3/04/15 it gapped up for a considerable volume-driven gain triggering a technical buy signal after it reported earnings +162% on +62% sales revenues for the Jan '15 quarter - continuing to show impressive sales revenues and earnings acceleration in sequential quarterly comparisons (see annotated graph below). AMBA's fundamentals match with the fact-based investment system guidelines with quarterly comparisons showing improvement above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria).
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares has been on the rise, up from 51 in Dec '12 to 231 in Mar '15, a reassuring indication concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is also an unbiased indication its shares have been under slight accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 27.6 million shares in the public float can contribute to great price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
