Leadership Waned and Indices Fell
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow lost -1.2%, the S&P 500 fell -1% and the NASDAQ retreated -1.3%. Behind Friday's losses for the major indices the volume totals were reported higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals, inflated by options expirations. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 4-1 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were only 3 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down abruptly from the prior session total of 27 stocks. New 52-week highs contracted yet still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 2 of the 14 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages have encountered distributional pressure and leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) has waned, putting the rally under pressure. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index declined 23 points to 2,081, slumping below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
Stocks retreated on Friday. The Dow lost 279 points to 17,826. The NASDAQ slid 75 points to 4,931. The major averages fell as traders took risk off the table. Chinese officials announced new rules aimed at clamping down on margin purchases and short selling. In the Eurozone, the IMF reiterated an unwillingness to ease Greek deadlines, but other creditors echoed their desire to find a resolution that kept the EU intact.
In data, CPI rose 0.2% in March, failing to meet estimates. A measure of confidence for April increased more than projected, but a leading index of economic indicators for March disappointed analysts.
All 10 of the S&P 500 sectors finished lower. Consumer discretionary was off the most. Comcast (CMCSA -2.09%) and Time Warner (TWX -1.44%) tumbled on reports of quashed merger plans. Google (GOOGL -1.98%) weighed on tech stocks as its own antitrust woes sent shares down. In earnings, American Express (AXP -4.44%) fell after missing on the bottom line and reporting lackluster guidance. However, Schlumberger (SLB +1.06%) rose after posting strong quarterly results and announcing 11,000 layoffs.
Treasuries resumed their weekly advance. The benchmark 10-year note rose 8/32 to yield 1.86%.
Commodities were mixed. WTI crude lost 1.2% to $56.03/barrel after posting the biggest weekly gain in over four years. COMEX gold climbed 0.4% to $1,202.90/ounce.

Consolidating Above 50-Day Moving Average Line
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Palo Alto Networks (PANW -$4.29 or -2.92% to $142.50) volume totals have generally been cooling while hovering near its all-time high. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($140.97)and recent lows near $134 define near term support. Subsequent violations would raise concerns and trigger technical sell signals. When recently wedging to a new high (N criteria) gains were backed by sub par volume and members were cautioned - "Stocks should have at least +40% above average volume while rising above the pivot point to clinch a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal."
The Computer Software - Security firm was last shown in this FSU section with annotated graphs on 3/27/15 under the headline, "Latest Consolidation is a Short New "Square Box" Base". Subsequent volume-driven gains above the new pivot point cited may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.
The Computer Software - Security firm It reported earnings +90% on +54% sales revenues for the Jan '15 quarter, its 3rd consecutive comparison with strong sales revenues increases and earnings above the +25% minimum guideline satisfying the C criteria. It now has an Earnings Per Share (EPS) Rating of 99, the highest possible rating. It has a strong annual earnings (A criteria) history.
It has a bullish Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4, an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 246 in Jun '13 to 645 in Mar '15, a very reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply (S criteria) of 68.3 million shares in the public float is another favorable characteristic.
