Breadth Negative as Major Indices Slumped
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The S&P 500 fell -1.5% and the Nasdaq Composite declined by -1.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 700 points, or -1.6% as well. The volume totals reported were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 4-1 margin at the NYSE and by more than a 3-1 margin at the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership thinned as there were 6 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 9 on the prior session. New 52-week lows totals expanded and outnumbered shrinking new highs totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices' uptrend has come under pressure (M criteria). Disciplined investors know that new buying efforts are only to be made in stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The S&P 600 Small cap Index has slumped to its 200-day moving average (DMA) line.
The equity indices fell after a surge in market rates following the release of the Employment Situation report for December. It showed nonfarm payrolls exceeding expectations with an increase of 256,000, while the unemployment rate edged lower to 4.1% from 4.2%, and the year-over-year growth in average hourly earnings was a solid 3.9%. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.78%, up nine basis points. The 2-year yield rose to 4.40%, an increase of 13 basis points.
Ten of the 11 S&P 500 sectors ended in the red. Energy stocks were a bright spot, leading the S&P 500 energy sector to close +0.3% higher, driven by commodity prices. WTI crude oil futures rose 3.6% to $76.63/bbl and natural gas futures jumped 4.6% to $3.40/mmbtu. Delta Air Lines (DAL +9.0%) rose following stronger-than-expected earnings results. Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA +27.6%) surged after beating earnings estimates.

The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.07%) finished flat while the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.21%) edged lower.

Encountered Distributional Pressure Amid Broader Weakness
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stride (LRN +$2.11 or +1.94% to $111.13) was highlighted in yellow in the earlier mid-day report with pivot point cited based on its 12/04/24 high. It hit a new all-time high but encountered distributional pressure and ended in the lower third of its intra-day range. Recently it consolidated in an orderly fashion above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($104). Subsequent gains and a strong close above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume may clinch a technical buy signal.
LRN reported Sep '24 quarterly earnings +755% on +15% sales revenues versus the year ago period. Three of the 4 latest quarterly comparisons were well above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong after a downturn in FY '20. It has an Earnings Per Share Rating of 99, the highest possible.
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 603 in Mar '24 to 671 in Dec '24, a reassuring sign concerning the i criteria. |
