Dow Misses Another Chance For A New 2010 High Close

Monday's volume totals were reported lower than the prior session total on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. The major averages erased solid early gains and ended mixed and nearly unchanged for a third straight session. Advancers narrowly led decliners on the NYSE but decliners led advancers by more than a 3-to-2 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. There were no standouts and the action was mixed among the 34 high-ranked stocks currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page. There were 86 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up considerably from a total of 47 issues on the prior session. New 52-week highs still easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges.

Volume was light ahead of this week’s midterm elections and the Fed meeting, which may announce new economic stimulus measures. Dow and Nasdaq rallied following the release of stronger-than-expected economic data, but the market's early enthusiasm faded. The ISM manufacturing index for October surprised analysts with an increase from the September reading. The positive news on manufacturing overshadowed a report that U.S. consumer spending rose less than forecast in September as incomes dropped for the first time in more than a year.

Financial stocks led an afternoon pullback. JP Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM -0.6%) erased an early gain and sank into the red following a report it is under investigation for allowing a hedge fund to improperly select assets for a deal backed by sub-prime mortgages. Energy stocks outperformed other sectors while oil prices rose the most in two weeks following new reports showing that manufacturing activity grew more than expected in both the U.S. and China.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up an early gain of 125 points before closing up 6 points, missing another opportunity to finish at a new 2010 high close. That marked the third time in two weeks that the Dow rose above its highest closing price of the year early in the day before pulling back.

Energy Shares Among Monday's Best Gainers

Financial shares were among Monday's worst laggards as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.64%) and Bank Index ($BKX -0.59%) closed modestly lower. The tech sector had a slightly negative bias as the Internet Index ($IIX -0.57%), Networking Index ($NWX -0.47%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.35%), and Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.32%) collectively ended with small losses. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.27%) also edged lower. Meanwhile defensive groups held their ground as the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.08%) and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.27%) inched higher and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.30%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.74%) were among the best gainers on the session.

Recent Lows and 50-Day Average Define Support to Watch

Ulta Salon Cosmetics & Fragrance, Inc. (ULTA -$0.28 or -0.91% to $30.41) has no overhead supply remaining to act as resistance, but it is extended from a sound base pattern now. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and recent chart low defines support to watch near the $28 level.

Its color code was changed to yellow with new pivot point cited in the 9/03/10 mid-day report (read here). Its strong close with a considerable volume spike to nearly 6 times average confirmed a fresh technical buy signal. This high-ranked leader in the Retail - Specialty group has strong quarterly earnings increases above the +25% guideline in the 4 latest comparisons (satisfies the C criteria). The number of top-rated funds with an ownership interest has grown from 49 funds in March '09 to 108 funds as of Sep '10 which is an encouraging sign of increasing institutional interest (the I criteria). Management's 36% ownership stake (after the latest offering) still keeps the company's directors very motivated to look after and build shareholder value.

Earlier this year, a Stock Bulletin published on March 12, 2010 (read here) alerted members to the company with favorable characteristics based on the winning models. Based on weak action was dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 8/13/10. In the interim it found support again near its 200 DMA line and prior lows in the $21-22 area. Then returned to the Featured Stocks list again when exhibiting bullish price/volume action.
