Major Averages End October Quietly Perched Near Recovery Highs

Friday's volume totals were reported near but lower than the prior session total on the Nasdaq exchange, while slightly higher on the NYSE. The major averages ended mixed and nearly unchanged again. Advancers led decliners by a 3-to-2 ratio on the NYSE and by a 4-to-3 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs still easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 47 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from a total of 53 issues on the prior session.

Standout gainers among the 35 high-ranked stocks currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page included Deckers Outdoor Corp (DECK +7.61%) after it reported earnings +24% on +22% sales revenues for the quarter ended September 30, 2010 versus the year ago period. The earnings increases was the smallest percentage improvement in the past 5 quarterly comparisons and borderline with the minimum (+25%) increase the investment system calls for. Meanwhile, Healthspring Inc (HS +6.38%) followed a shakeout on the prior session with a big gain into new high territory after dipping near its 50 DMA line. The prompt support near that important short term average has been impressive, however its earnings were +23% with sales revenues +10% for the quarter ended September 30, 2010 versus the year ago period, marking its weakest earnings increase in 5 quarterly comparisons with a worrisome deceleration in sales revenues growth. Volume and volatility often increase near earnings news, and investors must adhere to sound trading discipline to minimize mistakes.

Microsoft Corp (MSFT +1.3%) delivered better-than-forecast earnings and gave a boost to technology stocks. Chevron Corp (CVX -2.2%), another Dow component, fell after its profits disappointed investors. For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 Index were little changed, while the Nasdaq Composite Index gained +1.1% and extended its current winning streak to 8 days. For the month of October, the benchmark S&P 500 was up +3.7%. All of the major averages are perched quietly near their April 2010 highs.

The market was not flustered by reports of suspicious packages on cargo planes. Economic reports and corporate earnings also failed to raise any eyebrows. Third quarter gross domestic product gained 2.0% on an annual basis, in line with expectations. Chicago-area business activity expanded at a slightly greater pace than forecast, but that was offset by a report on consumer confidence that was slightly lower than expected. Part of the dollar's narrow trading range was the result of uncertainty ahead of the FOMC policy statement and the latest monthly jobs report, both of which will be released next week.

Broker/Dealer Index Challenging Resistance

Mild losses in influential financial shares led the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.69%) and Bank Index ($BKX -0.11%) to finish quietly lower on Friday, and the Retail Index ($RLX -0.19%) also drifted lower. Modest losses for the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.96%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.35%) were offset by small gains from the Networking Index ($NWX +0.05%), Internet Index ($IIX +0.25%), and Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.62%). Energy-related shares also finished the week quietly as the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.14%) inched higher and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.43%) ended with a small loss. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.34%) was a standout gainer.

PICTURED: The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.69%) is challenging resistance at prior highs and its 200-day moving average (DMA) line. Subsequent gains above those technical hurdles would be a very encouraging sign, as financial shares are considered to be good leading indicators.

Ahead Of Earnings 50 Day Average Line Acting As Resistance

Credit Acceptance Corp's (CACC +$0.29 or +0.50% to $58.81) volume totals have been drying up in recent weeks while the high-ranked Finance - Consumer/Commercial Loans firm has been consolidating below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. That important short-term average has been a stubborn resistance level since it was violated 4 weeks ago with losses on higher volume. Convincing gains above its 50 DMA would be an encouraging sign that would help its outlook, technically. It is due to report earnings on Monday, November 1, 2010, after the market closes. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 5.15 million shares in the public float could contribute to greater volatility in the event of any institutional buying or selling. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 28 in Sept '09 to 39 in Sep '10, a reassuring sign with respect to the I criteria.

CACC was featured in the 7/29/10 mid-day report (read here) after quietly reaching new high territory. The pivot point cited was based on its 2/01/10 high plus ten cents. It maintained a great track record of annual and quarterly sales revenues and earnings increases satisfying the C and A criteria of the fact-based investment system's fundamental guidelines. That cannot be said for its peer in the same industry group, Americredit Corp (ACF), which recently bankrupted GM made a bid to acquire on July 22, 2010, immediately after President Obama signed into law the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
