Indices Finished Up From Early Lows After Another Afternoon Rally

Following a heavy round of earnings reports the major averages finished mixed and nearly unchanged on Thursday's session. The Dow recovered from an early loss of 73 points. Volume totals were reported near but lower than the prior session's totals on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. Decliners led advancers by a 3-to-2 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange while advancers narrowly outnumbered decliners on the NYSE. New 52-week highs still easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 53 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from a total of 22 issues on the prior session.

A report that initial jobless claims unexpectedly dropped to a three-month low last week was among the headlines. While news from the labor front was good, several well-known NYSE listed companies were smacked with losses following their latest earnings reports. 3-M Corp (MMM -6.44%) and Avon Products (AVP -5.63%) suffered their biggest one-day declines since May. The Allstate Corp (ALL -6.31%) slumped after its profits were below forecasts. Motorola (MOT +0.49%) inched higher after it reported a revenue increase for the first time in almost four years.

The standout gainer of the 35 high-ranked stocks currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page was Syniverse Technologies (SVR +28.21%) after breaking news that Carlyle Group will buy the firm for $31 per share. The high-ranked leader from the Telecom Services - Wireless industry group found prompt support near its 50-day moving average line since its debut in the 9/22/10 mid-day report at $22.60, and it had been sputtering near all-time highs while volume totals were cooling in recent weeks.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index ended -1.1% off its April 2010 highs after a 7th consecutive gain, its 14th gain in 16 sessions. Closes near the session highs, after early weakness, have been a bullish characteristic spotted in recent trading.

Gold & Silver Index Posts Standout Gain; Rallied At 50-Day Average

Energy-related shares were mixed as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.05%) fell and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.36%) edged higher. Financial shares were mixed as the Bank Index ($BKX -0.35%) ended with a small loss while the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.90%) posted a good gain. Most other groups were quiet but had a slightly negative bias as the Networking Index ($NWX -0.23%), Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.20%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.06%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.03%), and Retail Index ($RLX -0.04%) inched lower, while the Internet Index ($IIX +0.16%) posted a tiny gain.

Holding Its Ground After Volume-Driven Gains To All Time Highs

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (CMG -$1.88 or -0.89% to $210.42) is holding its ground after considerable volume-driven gains on 10/22/10 and 10/26/10 for a new all-time highs. It is extended from any sound base, and disciplined investors know that it is usually best to avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above their pivot point. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line defines chart support above its prior highs in the $155 area.

Its last appearance in this FSU section with an annotated graph was on 9/01/10 under the headline "Mexican Food Chain Has Ingredients of Past Great Winners" as it rallied to multi-year highs with a considerable gain backed by 2 times above average volume. It has traded up as much as +36% higher since we observed - "The casual Mexican restaurant's shares are free to rise unhindered by overhead supply now. The market (M criteria) also is in better shape based on the broader strength, bullish action meeting the definition of a follow-through day (FTD). The FTD confirmed a new rally with large gains on higher volume, coupled with an increase in fresh technical breakouts."

Sales revenues increases have shown acceleration while up +12%, +16%, +20%, and +23% in recent quarterly comparisons while the C criteria is satisfied by ongoing earnings increases above the +25% guideline. It also has a good annual (A criteria) earnings history. As it returned to the Featured Stocks list it was noted that it -"Rebounded considerably after a very deep correction, falling from $123 when it was dropped from the Featured Stocks list 1/7/08, to as low as $36 in November '08."
