Nasdaq Composite Index Buoyed By Great Google Gains

There were 64 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the total of 53 issues that hit the BreakOuts Page on the prior session. The major averages ended mixed with volume totals reported high on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Thursday's session totals. The NYSE saw decliners outnumber gainers by a 3-to-2 margin while on the Nasdaq exchange the mix was just narrowly negative. New 52-week highs continually are outnumbering new 52-week lows on both exchanges in recent weeks, and new lows on the NYSE have been in the single digits. This is a typical characteristic of a robust Bull Market, yet investors should continue reading the daily reports for any sudden shifts.

JP MorganChase (JPM -4%) and General Electric (GE -5%) dragged the Dow Jones Industrial Average into the red. Meanwhile, Google (GOOG +11.4%) shares gapped up for a considerable gain and hit their highest level since January after the Internet search giant posted strong earnings. Its bullish performance fueled a rally in technology stocks that helped the Nasdaq Composite Index post a standout gain.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke added to expectations for another round of stimulus. Bernanke said in a speech in Boston that inflation is too low and unemployment is too high. Also, a closely-watched reading of consumer confidence, University of Michigan’s index, suggested consumers are less likely this month to purchase big-ticket items like cars.

During corrections earlier this year, there were sudden shifts from triple digit or near-triple digit totals, down to single digit totals (and zeroes) on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page. Recalling those downdrafts and "flash crashes" which occurred, they resulted from many stocks breaking down. Many individual issues were then beginning much deeper corrections while breadth turned horridly negative. Watch, don't guess or be sloppy, and always be sure to have good reflexes if you are trading - especially during this earnings season!

While many leading stocks have recently been pausing to consolidate their prior gains, very few Featured Stocks have broken down versus those that are working. Volume and volatility typically increase during earnings season. Be sure to check "News" links for headlines and be watching for notes concerning when companies will be reporting results for the latest quarter. Always employ proper discipline by not chasing extended stocks and never holding losses that grow larger than -7-8%, per the fact-based system's guidelines.

PICTURED: The Small-cap Russell 2000 Index ended -5.5% off its April 2010 peak. Like the major averages, its summer highs come into play as support to watch above the important 50-day and 200-day moving averages (DMA) lines. The major averages' ability to eventually eclipse the year's earlier highs could easily coincide with much greater upward momentum in the market. Trade accordingly.

Bank Index's Dive Toward August Lows Harms Outlook

The Bank Index ($BKX -2.37%) slumped for a 3rd consecutive damaging loss and was the weakest performer this week (shown in the IGW section Thursday - read here) amid concerns that banks will face increasing legal costs to cover faulty mortgage foreclosures. The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.45%) also sputtered, and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.10%) backpedaled. On the positive side, the Retail Index ($RLX +1.47%) rang up a solid gain, helping offset weak financial shares' impact on the major averages. The Internet Index ($IIX +1.92%) led the tech sector higher, followed by modest gains from the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.73%), Networking Index ($NWX +0.45%), and Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.65%). Gains in energy-related areas helped the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.78%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.18%) also rise.

Quiet Finish Following Burst Of Buying Earlier This Week

Warner Chilcott Plc (WCRX -$0.05 or -0.20% to $24.51) is up meaningfully since it was featured in the 8/23/10 mid-day report. In the FSU section it was then shown with an annotated graph under the headline "Ireland-Based Drug Firm Hitting New Highs" as it was noted - "The close above its pivot point with volume more than 3 times average helped trigger a technical buy signal as it rose from a cup shaped base." It showed drastic increases in recent quarterly comparisons as the high-ranked firm hailing from the Medical - Ethical Drugs industry has done very well since buying Procter & Gamble Co's prescription drug business in a deal first announced 8/24/09. It is clear of resistance due to overhead supply and poised to rally further.

A quirky $8.50 dividend impacted its share price on September 9th, so do not be confused when looking back at earlier reports. It rallied higher with gains backed by above average volume, then found support above prior chart highs when consolidating for a few weeks. On October 11th it gapped up with a powerful gain on heavy volume, rallying above prior highs following a consolidation near its 10-week moving average line. Its color code was changed to yellow, as it was then noted - "Buyable up to +5% above its latest high ($23.53 X 1.05 or $24.81) as a secondary buy point following its earlier technical breakout. A new pivot point is not cited as a new base was not formed." Its light volume losses on Thursday and Friday ended the week just below the upper limit of that range.
