Major Averages Rally With Higher Volume And Very Positive Breadth Again

Stocks soared on Tuesday as the US dollar plunged and central banks in Japan and Australia surprised many with their decisions on interest rates. Volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Monday's session which signaled that large institutions were aggressively accumulating stocks. Advancers trumped decliners by over a 4-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, while new 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 86 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up nicely from the 19 issues that appeared on the prior session.

Overnight, the US dollar plunged after the Bank of Japan cut rates to zero, announced another round of asset purchases, and Australia's central bank held rates steady. Both banks caught analysts off guard which sent stocks and a slew of commodities soaring in overnight trade. Stocks extended their rally after the ISM's service index rebounded and topped estimates. The faster-than-expected report bodes well for the global recovery.

The action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been very strong and stocks are simply pausing to consolidate their recent gains. It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend support (formerly resistance) in recent weeks. The next level of support for the major averages is their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines while the next level of resistance is their respective April highs. Trade accordingly.

Financial, Energy, and Tech Sectors Post Solid Gains

Strength in the financial groups was a reassuring sign as the Bank Index ($BKX +3.14%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +2.53%) helped underpin Tuesday's big gains for the major averages. The energy group surged as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +2.55%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +2.57%) tallied big gains and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +3.11%) posted an even larger gain as commodity-linked groups were among the session's standout gainers. The Healthcare Index ($HMO +1.80%) and Retail Index ($RLX +1.85%) rose. Unanimous gains in the tech sector indices rounded out a widely positive session as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +2.07%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX +2.27%), Internet Index ($IIX +2.48%), and Networking Index ($NWX +2.74%) posted solid gains of better than +2% each.

Action Following Breakaway Gap Has Been Strong

Fossil Inc (FOSL +$1.39 or +2.64% to $54.148) rallied for a solid gain today with above average volume for its second best close after recent signs of distribution. An upward trendline defines initial support to watch after it has been repeatedly noted as "extended from any sound base." It was last shown in the FSU section with an annotated graph on 8/11/10 under the headline, "Breakaway Gap On More Than Triple Average Volume", right after it was featured in yellow in the 8/10/10 mid-day report (read here).

The M criteria argues that 3 out of 4 stocks will follow the direction of the major averages, so widespread leadership helps its chances to continue rallying. As before, it faces no resistance due to overhead supply. Sales revenues and earnings increases showed impressive acceleration in the 3 latest quarters (Dec '09, Mar and Jun '10) following a streak of 4 negative comparisons versus the year ago period. It is a promising looking outlier while a lack of leadership in the Retail/Wholesale - Jewelry group (L criteria) has been noted.
