Major Averages Finish Week Holding Solid Gains

For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose +2.3%, the S&P 500 Index gained +2.7%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was higher by +2.8%, now sitting near a 12-year high. Stocks finished little changed on Friday while the volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by about a 2-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 7-5 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of new 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 112 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 122 stocks. There were gains for only 10 of the 23 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Stocks traded in a tight range as investors weighed Fed stimulus measures against a disappointing jobs report. Non-farm payrolls gained 96,000 in August, missing the consensus estimate for a gain of 130,000. In addition, the unemployment rate unexpectedly ticked lower to 8.1% as less Americans sought employment. Attention now turns to next week's all-important FOMC meeting with investors hoping that the central bank will take action to help stimulate growth and lower unemployment.

Sector action was mixed. Materials were the best performing group as commodities rallied after China approved new infrastructure projects to boost economic growth. Meanwhile, telecommunication shares lagged behind with Verizon Communications Inc (VZ -0.97%) and AT&T Inc (T -0.37%) giving up ground as investors turned to more cyclically sensitive issues.

In fixed-income, the 10-year note rose for the first time in four sessions as it gained 2/32 to yield 1.67%.

The M criteria is still favorable as the major indices have maintained their previously confirmed rally with a healthy level of leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs).

Financial and Commodity-Linked Groups Led Gainers

Financial and commodity-linked groups led Friday's gainers. The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.93%) and Bank Index ($BKX +1.53%) were influential gainers. The Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.71%), Oil Services Index ($OSX +2.14%), and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +3.17%) posted even larger gains. The Retail Index ($RLX +0.34%) and the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.38%) edged higher. In the tech sector, the Networking Index ($NWX +1.09%) and Internet Index ($IIX +0.44%) posted gains, the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.07%) finished flat, meanwhile the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.82%) lost ground.

Encountering Resistance Near Prior Highs

Nationstar Mtg Hldgs Inc (NSM -$0.68 or -2.38% to $27.88) pulled back today for a 3rd consecutive loss following a worrisome "negative reversal" at its 52-week high. It has recently been noted - "A strong finish above the new pivot point cited may clear the advanced 'ascending base' pattern and clinch a new (or add-on) technical buy signal." The ascending base is marked by 3 pullbacks in the 10-20% range following an earlier technical breakout. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs would be a reassuring sign that it may have much further to go, but thus far it has encountered resistance near prior highs and not powered convincingly above its new pivot point.

Its last appearance in this FSU section with an annotated graph was on 8/01/12 under the headline, "Found Support Near Prior Highs and 50-Day Moving Average" while consolidating after the company had proposed an Offering of $100 million of Senior Notes. Afterward it reported strong earnings and sales increased for the Jun '12 quarter well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), continuing its strong earnings growth history. The Finance - Mortgage Related Services group has the highest possible Group Relative Strength Rating of 99, a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria. NSM has attracted increasing ownership interest from top-rated funds, rising from 52 funds in Mar '12 to 119 in Jun '12, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
