Major Averages Pulled Back on Lighter Volume

The major averages ended lower on Monday while the volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by nearly a 3-2 ratio on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of new 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 77 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 112 stocks. There were gains for only 3 of the 23 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Losses came despite speculation that the Fed may announce another round of government bond-buying at the conclusion of the FOMC meeting on Thursday. Euro zone concerns overshadowed speculation of global central bank action. In Europe, Greece's Prime Minister was scheduled to meet with the nation's creditors after failing to secure a coalition agreement on required spending cuts to help prevent the country from exiting the euro. This offset renewed stimulus hopes after August non-farm payrolls rose less than projected last Friday and Chinese trade data signaled a further slowdown with an unexpected decline in August imports and slower than expected export growth. Investors were also cautious ahead of a ruling by Germany's Constitutional Court on the country's participation in the euro zone's permanent bailout fund.

Technology lagged behind as Intel Corp (INTC -3.84%) continued to slide after the company lowered its third-quarter revenue outlook last week and Apple Inc (AAPL -2.60%) also retreated Financials weighed on markets as American International Group, Inc (AIG -2.06%) shares fell while the government planned and other offering to further reduce the still large stake in the company held by taxpayers.

Action was mixed in commodities. Bets for further Chinese stimulus measures helped copper touch a four-month high. Gold pared back from a six-month high as the U.S. dollar strengthened and oil rebounded to erase an earlier decline of -1%.

The M criteria is still favorable as the major indices have maintained their previously confirmed rally with a healthy level of leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs).

Defensive, Tech, Financial and Energy-Related Groups Fell

Defensive groups were among the weakest performers on Monday as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.57%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO -1.34%) lost ground. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.74%), Networking Index ($NWX -1.26%), Internet Index ($IIX -1.02%), and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.47%) finished with unanimous losses. The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -1.13%) and Bank Index ($BKX -0.77%) also had a negative influence on the major averages. Energy-related shares edged lower as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.72%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.51%) lost ground.

Consolidation Too Brief and Choppy for a Vaild New Base

Vitamin Shoppe Inc's (VSI -$0.15 or -0.25% to $59.40) paused today following a streak of 4 consecutive gains. It rebounded and rallied back above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and above its previously cited pivot point last week, helping its technical stance. Its current consolidation is too brief and choppy to be considered a valid new base pattern.

Prior lows near $52 define near-term support where any further deterioration would raise more serious concerns. VSI was last shown in this FSU section on 8/02/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Watch for Earnings News Due Early Next Week". It reported an earnings increase of +38% on +13% sales revenues for the Jun '12 quarter. Additional leadership (L criteria) shown by other stocks in the Retail - Specialty group has still been a reassuring sign even though the Group Relative Strength Rating fell to 64 from 94 when shown in this section on 7/02/12.

Fundamentally, it has earned high ranks after showing strong quarterly and annual earnings increases satisfying the C and A criteria. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 288 in Jun '11 to 383 in Jun '12, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Vitamin Shoppe has 29.7 million shares outstanding. That small supply is not a bad thing, but could contribute to greater price volatility. Historic studies have shown that once companies have grown their supply (S criteria) of shares outstanding to hundreds of millions, or even billions of shares outstanding, they are less likely candidates to be "above average" gainers.
