S&P 500 Index at All-Time Record After 5th Weekly Gain
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week the major averages edged higher. Both the Dow and S&P 500 rose +0.2% on the week while the NASDAQ increased less than +0.1%. finish lower. Stocks closed out the week on a positive note with Friday's gains. Volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by almost a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and by a 5-4 margin on the NASDAQ exchange. There were 29 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 53 stocks. New 52-week highs contracted again yet still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 9 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page. The broader market (M criteria) has been in a "confirmed uptrend" while leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs) has remained healthy. Remember that disciplined investors buy stocks with superior fundamentals only after they have triggered a proper technical buy signal.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index closed at a fresh all-time high as it rose 10 points to 2,007. The weekly graph shows it after 5 consecutive weekly gains, up +8.6% year-to-date.
Dow gained 67 points to 17,137 and NASDAQ increased 20 points to 4,582 as the major averages erased early losses on Friday. Easing geopolitical tensions overshadowed a disappointing employment report. Ukraine's President announced a cease-fire following an agreement with pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of the country. On the economic front, employers hired the fewest amount of workers this year as non-farm payrolls increased by 142,000 in August, missing expectations for a gain of 230,000. In addition, the unemployment rate ticked lower to 6.1% from 6.2% as people left the workforce.
Overall, every sector in the S&P 500 advanced. Utilities and telecom were among the best performing groups as investors searched for yield. Dominion Resources (D +1.4%) and AT&T (T +0.6%) edged higher. Gains in technology and energy also helped lift the market with Microsoft (MSFT +1.4%) and Halliburton (HAL +1.3%) among stocks on the rise.
Treasuries declined. The 10-year note lost 1/32 to yield 2.46%. The 30-year bond fell 10/32 to yield 3.23%.

Tech Gains Led Market Higher
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Networking Index ($NWX +0.68%) and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.85%) led the tech sector higher while the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.03%) finished flat. The Bank Index ($BKX +0.00%) ended unchanged while modest gains from the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.38%) and the Retail Index ($RLX +0.19%) helped to give the major averages a lift on Friday. Commodity-linked groups had a positive bias as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.24%), Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.37%), and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.61%) each posted a modest gain.

Perched at High After Triggering Technical Buy Signal
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
YY Inc (YY -$0.70 or -0.76% to $91.42) is perched at its 52-week high after rising above its pivot point with +143% above average volume on the prior session. Volume was more than +40% above average as the stock rallied above its pivot point to trigger a proper technical buy signal. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($80.69) defines near-term support to watch.
The high-ranked Internet - Content firm was last shown in this FSU section with annotated graphs on 8/19/14 under the headline, "Encountered Distributional Pressure Near Prior High", after highlighted in yellow with a new pivot point cited based on its 3/06/14 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). Fundamentals through the Jun '14 quarter remain very strong. It reported earnings +100% on +103% sales revenues for the Jun '14 quarter, and its great record of strong earnings and sales revenues increases in quarterly comparisons satisfies the C criteria. Its limited annual earnings (A criteria) history is a concern and it is up considerably from its $11 IPO on 11/21/12. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 58 in Sep '13 to 169 in Jun '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
Disciplined investors avoid chasing extended stocks more than +5% above prior highs and always limit losses by selling if any stock falls more than -7% from their purchase price.
