Major Averages Paused After Big Gains

On Wednesday the major averages toggled between gains to losses in a range-bound session, before settling with mixed results. The volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Breadth was negative as declining issues led advancing issues by 3-1 on the NYSE and by more than 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. Stocks hitting new 52-week highs still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 96 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 90 stocks. However, the session concluded with gains from only 7 of the 31 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Stocks failed to build upon Tuesday's big rally following mostly positive results to the Federal Reserve's bank stress tests. Earlier economic data was largely in-line with projections. Export prices for February rose +0.4%, just above the projected +0.3% increase, while import prices increased +0.4%, less than the expected +0.6% advance.

Financial stocks were active as investors digested the stress test results. Bank of America Corp (BAC +4.1%) rose and Citigroup Inc (C -3.4%) fell. On the M&A front, Ameristar Casinos Inc (ASCA +2.65%) rose after it agreed to purchase Creative Casinos. In other news, Cliffs Natural Resources Inc (CLF +7.1%) rallied following the company's newly announced capital-allocation plan and dividend boost.

The major averages' (M criteria) have been underpinned by widespread leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) as they have continued the prior rally. Disciplined investors may have a bias toward accumulating stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based system. As always, avoid chasing stocks extended too far from sound base patterns and be sure to limit losses if ever any stock falls more than -7% from your purchase price.

Gold & Silver Index Lags And Dives Toward Prior Chart Lows

Financial shares were mixed as the Bank Index ($BKX +1.31%) posted a gain and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.47%) edged lower. The Retail Index ($RLX +0.19%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.40%) posted small gains. Weakness in energy-related shares pushed the Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.67%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.03%) lower. The tech sector also had a negative bias as the Networking Index ($NWX -1.18%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.69%), Internet Index ($IIX -0.64%), and Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.36%) ended unanimously lower.

Holding Ground Above Pivot Point After Volume-Driven Gains

Dish Network Corp (DISH -$0.21 or -0.66% to $31.38) edged lower today on light volume. It remains within 5% of its pivot point, not too extended from its latest base. Prior highs in the $30 area define initial support to watch on pullbacks. It was featured in yellow in the 3/07/12 mid-day report (read here) with a pivot point cited based on its 1/19/12 high plus 10 cents. It finished that session with a gain backed by 2 times average volume as it hit a new 52-week high, rising from an orderly consolidation above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line, triggering a technical buy signal.

Its quarterly earnings increases in recent comparisons have been above the +25% guideline satisfying the C criteria. No resistance remains due to overhead supply. Its prior earnings history included a downturn in FY '09, a flaw with respect to the A criteria. Increasing ownership by top-rated funds rose from 598 in Mar '11 to 761 in Dec '11, a reassuring concerning the I criteria.
