Indices Had Mixed Session; S&P 500 Index's Best January in 15 Years

The major averages finished mixed while the volume totals on Tuesday were reported higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth on the NYSE had a positive bias as advancers led decliners by about 3-2 while advancers narrowly led decliners on the Nasdaq exchange. Stocks hitting new 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 50 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, more than doubling the prior session total of 23 stocks. There were losses for only 6 of the 22 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Stocks pulled back from their opening highs, to trade modestly lower as investors' optimism over Europe is overshadowed by disappointing economic readings. Specifically, Monday's meeting of European leaders was successful as policymakers agreed upon tighter fiscal policies for member nations. In addition, an expectation of a deal between Greece and their private creditors is adding to positive sentiment. European markets closed with modest gains as the FTSE in London and the German DAX both advanced +0.2%. Treasuries were higher with the 10-year note up 1/2 a point to yield 1.79%.

On the economic front, data was disappointing. The S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index showed residential home prices fell -0.7% in November, while Chicago PMI fell to 60.2, its lowest reading since October 2011. Also on the downside, January consumer confidence fell to 61.1 from 64.5 in December.

On the earnings front, shares of United Parcel Service Inc (UPS -0.66%) edged lower, despite topping analysts' EPS estimates. Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM -2.05%) fell after the company modestly beat analysts' expectations amid light production volume. Tech retailer Radioshack Corp (RSH -29.81%) sank after the company warned of disappointing fourth-quarter results on weak pre-paid mobile revenue.

The recent expansion in leadership (stocks making new 52-week highs) has been noted as a reassuring sign concerning the current confirmed market uptrend and the M criteria, as a healthy crop of strong leaders is necessary for any sustained market advance. Technical improvement from financial shares and key growth areas including the tech sector has been another encouraging sign helping the market outlook.

Financial stocks had a positive bias as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.31%) and Bank Index ($BKX +0.40%) posted small gains on Tuesday. The Healthcare Index ($HMO +1.13%) also posted a solid gain and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.18%) edged higher, meanwhile the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.05%) finished flat and the Networking Index ($NWX -0.60%) and Internet Index ($IIX -0.16%) ended with small losses. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.00%) was unchanged, the Retail Index ($RLX -0.12%) edged lower, and energy-related shares were quiet as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.21%) edged higher and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.05%) ended flat.

O S I Systems Inc (OSIS +$0.24 or +0.45% to $53.73) is quietly consolidating -6.6% from its all-time high. It recently reported earnings +20% on +11% sales revenues for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 versus the year ago period. The annotated weekly graph illustrates how the latest results, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline of the investment system, also marked its weakest earnings comparison in 2 years, raising concerns. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line defines important support to watch where a violation would trigger a technical sell signal.

Its last appearance in this FSU section was on 12/27/11 with an annotated daily graph under the headline, "Best Ever Close For High-Ranked Leader", followed by an ongoing spurt of volume-driven gains afterward. In the process it rallied as much as +36.7% above its price ($42.07) when first highlighted in yellow in the 11/01/11 mid-day breakouts report (read here). Annual earnings (A criteria) growth has been strong. Ownership by top-rated funds has not shown any great increases in the past 6 months.
