Leadership Contracted as Major Averages Pulled Back
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mostly lower on Monday. The Dow was up 39 points to 19796. The S&P 500 lost 2 points to 2256 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 31 points to 5412. Volume totals were higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers more than a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange and nearly 2-1 on the NYSE. There were 73 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 122 on the prior session. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index remains perched near its record high.
The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The S&P 500 pulled back from record highs on Monday as oil prices climbed and Treasury yields spiked ahead of the Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting. The central bank is largely expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points at the conclusion of this week’s meeting. Overseas, OPEC and non-OPEC countries agreed to cut oil production on Saturday. NYMEX WTI crude advanced 1.8% to $52.43/barrel, as Russia agreed to reduce output by 558,000 barrels per day.
Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in positive territory. Telecom stocks outperformed with AT&T (T +1.83%) rose after being the subject of positive analyst commentary. Energy shares caught a boost with Exxon Mobil (XOM +2.22%) rising. In the consumer space, Viacom (VIA +9.4%) after negotiations ended on the proposed merger with CBS (CBS -0.61%) . Shares of 21st Century Fox (FOX -6.20%) fell amid speculation the bid to buy Sky Plc (SKYAY -1.32%) could run into a roadblock. In Health Care, Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN -12.86%) as the board announced the resignation of the CEO and CFO.
Treasuries finished mixed with the benchmark 10-year note down 2/32 to yield 2.47%. In commodities, COMEX gold added 0.4% to $1163.50/ounce.
