Indices Extended Gains Into New High Territory
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher on Tuesday. The Dow was up 67 points to 19023. The S&P 500 added 4 points to 2202 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 17 points to 5386. Volume totals were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by more than 2-1 on the NYSE and by more than 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 117 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 98 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index has been rallying for new record highs.
The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages extended record highs on the session Tuesday as investors digested better-than-expected housing data and optimistic corporate earnings releases. On the economic front, existing home sales rose 2% in October, to the highest level since February 2007. In earnings, Dollar Tree gained 8.2% to $88.68 as the company beat estimates on the top and bottom line. Burlington Stores climbed 16% to $86.04 after the retailer raised its forward EPS guidance by 6%.
Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in positive territory. In the consumer space, Campbell Soup (CPB +3.60%) rose as quarterly revenue beat Wall Street expectations. Shares of Hormel Foods (HRL +2.63%) was higher amid a record performance in fourth-quarter earnings results. Technology stocks fluctuated throughout the session with Analog Devices (ADI +4.41%) while Palo Alto Networks (PANW -13.24%) fell. Elsewhere in Tech, shares of Medtronic (MDT -8.66%) fell after the medical device maker posted weaker-than-expected quarterly sales.
Treasuries finished mixed with the benchmark 10-year note up 1/32 to yield 2.31%. The 30-year bond slipped 4/32 to yield 3.00%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 0.5% to $47.99/barrel. COMEX gold added 0.2% to $1211.60/ounce.

Very Extended From Prior Base Following Post-Election Gains
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
ServisFirst Bancshares Inc (SFBS +$1.84 or +2.70% to $69.89) hit yet another new all-time high today, adding to a spurt of volume-driven gains and getting very extended from its prior base. It got a burst of momentum along with many other Financial stocks following the election, rallying considerably since last shown in this FSU section on 11/07/16 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Relative Strength Improved as Bullish Action Has Continued". It was recently noted that its 10/31/16 gain backed by +52% above average volume helped reconfirm a technical buy signal. Since 9/22/16 its Relative Strength Rating has improved from 74 to 94, well above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates under the fact-based investment system.
SFBS reported earnings +28% on +18% sales revenues for the Sep '16 quarter, its 4th consecutive quarterly comparison above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), helping it match the fact-based investment system's guidelines. Earnings rose +28%, +34%, and +31% in the Dec '15, Mar and Jun '16 quarters, respectively, and underlying sales revenues growth has been in the +17-26% range. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong.
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 159 in Sep '15 to 231 in Sep '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.5 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply of only 23.1 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. |

G - Found support at its 50 DMA line ($45.24) this week. A damaging violation would raise concerns and deterioration below recent lows in the $41 area would raise more serious concerns and trigger a worrisome technical sell signal. Reported earnings +10% on +6% sales revenues for the Sep '16 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), raising concerns. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.
