Major Indices Inched Higher But Breadth Had Slightly Negative Bias
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The S&P 500 (+0.1%), Dow Jones Industrial Average (+0.1%), and Nasdaq Composite (+0.1%) eked out incremental gains to close at record highs. The Russell 2000 (-0.3%) closed in negative territory. Decliners led advancers by a 4-3 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session on both major exchanges. There were 73 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit a new 52-week high and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 74 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange for the 3rd consecutive session. The major indices (M criteria) are in a "confirmed uptrend" after enduring distributional pressure in recent weeks. The Featured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index hit another new record high.
The mood remained optimistic about a Phase One agreement with China. The NAHB Housing Market Index for November declined to 70 from 71 in October. Investors will receive Housing Starts and Building Permits for October on Tuesday.
Corporate news included HP Inc. (HPQ -0.84%) turning down the takeover bid from Xerox (XRX +0.92%). Netflix (NFLX +2.56%) rose on speculation that either Carl Icahn or Bill Ackman built a large stake in the company.
U.S. Treasuries extended last week's advance, pushing yields slightly lower across the curve. The 2-yr yield declined two basis points to 1.59%, and the 10-yr yield declined three basis points to 1.81%. The U.S. Dollar Index declined 0.2% to 97.80.

The Retail Index ($RLX +0.34%) posted a modest gain while the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.08%) and the Bank Index ($BKX +0.12%) both inched higher. The tech sector was mixed as the Biotech Index ($BTK -0.45%) and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.24%) both edged lower while the Networking Index ($NWX +0.14%) eked out a tiny gain. The Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.26%) and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.12%) both lost ground, meanwhile the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.40%) was a standout gainer.
PICTURED: The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.08%) is perched within close striking distance of its 2019 high.

Resilience Shown Despite Another Sub Par Earnings Report
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Churchill Downs Inc (CHDN +$1.74 or +1.38% to $128.25) rebounded above its 50 DMA line ($126.87) which recently acted as resistance. It has shown resilience following damaging volume-driven losses after it reported Sep '19 earnings +4% on +38% sales revenues versus the year ago period, its 2nd consecutive quarterly comparison below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Fundamental concerns have been noted, yet it still has an Earnings Per Share Rating of 87. Annual earnings (A criteria) growth has been strong since a downturn in FY '14.
The L criteria of the fact-based investment system guides investors toward buying leading stocks that are in leading industry groups. The Leisure - Gaming/Equipment industry group has a Group Relative Strength Rating of B+.
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 333 in Jun '17 to 461 in Sep '19, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a small supply of 39.8 million shares (S criteria) outstanding following a 3:1 split effective 1/28/19, and this small supply can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
