Nasdaq and S&P 500 Indexes Rose While Dow Industrials Ended Lower
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The S&P 500 settled 0.2% higher and the Nasdaq Composite closed up 0.8% The volume totals reported were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a narrow margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 33 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 25 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the Nasdaq exchange for a second consecutive session. The major indices are in a confirmed uptrend (M criteria). Disciplined investors know that new buying efforts are only to be made in stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index posted a gain with lighter volume after pulling back from near its all-time high.
The S&P 500 communication services sector was a top performer, jumping +3.2% while the materials sector logged the largest decline, down -1.4%. Shares of Tesla (TSLA +21.9%) rallied after impressive Q3 earnings and a 2025 vehicle growth estimate.
Losses in IBM (IBM -6.2%), Honeywell (HON -5.1%), and Boeing (BA -1.2%) created a drag. Union Pacific (UNP -4.4%) and Harley Davidson (HOG -7.2%) were down after reporting earnings results. Meanwhile, influential winners included Whirlpool (WHR +11.2%), Mattel (MAT +4.4%), Lam Research (LRCX +5.1%), and ServiceNow (NOW +5.4%) settled higher in response to earnings news, providing added support to the broader market.
The 2-yr yield settled two basis points lower at 4.07% and the 10-yr yield settled four basis points lower at 4.20%.
