Major Indices End Flat After Shedding Early Gains

For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost -2.1%, the benchmark S&P 500 Index shed -2.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite Index retreated -2.9%. On Friday the indices gave up early gains to close mixed and little changed. The volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session's totals. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 9-5 margin on the NYSE and by a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. The total number of new 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE, however new lows outnumbered new highs on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 13 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 23 stocks. There were gains for 12 of the 22 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page, a slightly positive bias versus the broader market's negative bias.

Stocks failed to hold their early morning gains as investors overlooked a stronger-than-expected reading in October consumer sentiment. Six of the 10 sectors on the S&P finished lower, led by losses in financial stocks. Bank of America Corp (BAC -2.36%) and Citigroup Inc (C -2.17%) fell. Also in the space, shares of JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM -0.79%) fell despite posting quarterly earnings ahead of analysts' estimates. Also on the earnings front, trucking company J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc (JBHT +6.53%) rallied after the company reported better-than-expected quarterly results.

Turning to fixed income markets, Treasuries were higher along the curve. The benchmark 10-year note was up 1/8 of a point to yield 1.66% and the 30-year bond added 3/8 of a point to yield 2.84%.

Recent weakness and technical deterioration was noted in the Nasdaq Composite Index (10/09/12 - read here) . Waning leadership, or fewer stocks hitting new 52-week highs, also suggested that the market rally was coming under pressure. The newspaper waved a white flag and termed it a market "correction" on Wednesday.

Investors should watch individual holdings very carefully through the current earnings season and be prepared to take quick action. In market corrections the M criteria argues against new buying efforts. Keep a watchlist of strong acting stocks with all-key criteria in anticipation of the next confirmed uptrend. Financial, Tech, and Defensive Groups Led Decliners

Defensive groups including the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.81%) and the Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.71%) fell. Weakness in financial shares weighed on the major averages as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -1.80%) and Bank Index ($BKX -2.46%) were smacked with losses. The Biotechnology Index ($BTK -1.36%), Networking Index ($NWX -1.17%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.53%), and the Internet Index ($IIX -0.36%) finished unanimously lower. Energy-related shares edged lower as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.46%) and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.28%) fell modestly. A small loss for the Retail Index ($RLX -0.27%) rounded out Friday's widely negative session.

New High Close Following Latest Breakout

Altisource Portfolio Solutions Sa (ASPS +$3.65 or +3.29% to $114.73) finished near the session high with a gain today on below average volume for a best-ever close. It is very extended from its latest base. Prior highs in the $92 area define initial support to watch on pullbacks.

It was last shown in this FSU section while consolidating -5.1% from its all-time high on 9/11/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Brief Consolidation May Soon Be Noted as a Sound New Base". It had been repeatedly noted - "Extended from its prior base, and its 50 DMA line defines near-term support to watch." On 9/24/2012 its color code was changed to yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 8/20/12 high plus 10 cents. On 10/03/12 its volume-driven gain above its pivot point triggered a new (or add-on) technical buy signal and it quickly got extended beyond its "max buy" level.

It reported earnings +117% on +55% sales revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2012 versus the year ago period. Earnings increases have been above the +25% guideline, satisfying the C criteria, and backed by solid sales revenues increases in the 4 latest quarterly comparisons. It is due to report earnings for the Sep '12 quarter on the morning of Thursday, 25 October 2012. This Luxembourg-based Financial Services firm's small supply (S criteria) of only 15.4 million shares in the public float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 108 in Sep '11 to 158 in Sep '12, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.7 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Disciplined investors always avoid chasing extended stocks, and they limit losses by selling if ever any stock falls more than -7% from their purchase price.
