Indices Edge Lower While Advancers Lead Decliners and New Highs List Expands

SPECIAL NOTICE: 3rd Quarter 2010 - CANSLIM.net Webcast - Airs Tonight - September 29th, 2010 at 8PM EST! Stocks spent most of Wednesday's session in the red as protests erupted throughout Europe over the newly announced austerity measures aimed at curbing the region's debt levels. The volume totals were reported lower on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Tuesday's session which signaled that large institutions were not aggressively selling stocks. Advancers even narrowly outnumbered decliners on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, while new 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 75 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made a new 52-week high and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, increasing from the 70 issues that appeared on the prior session.

Protests erupted throughout Europe which brought new worries about the health of the region's financial system. It was interesting to see the Euro rally, which suggests that investors believe, in the long run, the new austerity measures are a net positive for the region. In other news, it was not surprising that with renewed concerns out of Europe coupled with a weaker US dollar, gold surged to a new record high on Wednesday. On average, stocks are slightly lower this week which is healthy considering that September 2010 will likely go down in history as one of the strongest months on record!

The action since this rally was confirmed on the September 1, 2010 follow-through day (FTD) has been very strong. Looking forward, the window is open for disciplined investors to carefully buy high-ranked stocks, while many pundits are expecting that markets may consolidate following recent gains. It was encouraging to see the bulls show up and defend support (formerly resistance) again today. The next level of support for the major averages is their respective 200-day moving average (DMA) lines while the next level of resistance is their respective April highs. Trade accordingly.

Energy-related stocks were some of Wednesday's best gainers as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.77%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +2.20%) rose. The influential financial group continued to struggle as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.51%) and Bank Index ($BKX -0.41%) lost ground. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.50%) and mixed tech sector also limited the major averages' ability to make headway as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.65%) and Networking Index ($NWX -0.39%) lost ground and the Internet Index ($IIX +0.21%) and Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.67%) posted small gains. Safe haven groups including the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.19%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.17%) edged lower.

Breakout Narrowly Met Volume Guideline When Clearing Adjusted Pivot

Steve Madden Ltd (SHOO +$1.09 or +2.66% to $42.00) posted a 2nd consecutive gain today with above average volume while hitting new 52-week highs. Its solid gain on 9/28/10 with +50% above average volume triggered a technical buy signal, not with very heavy volume, but volume just meeting the minimum volume threshold under the fact-based investment system guidelines. It found support near its 50-day moving average line since its last appearance in the FSU section on 8/05/10 under the headline "Footwear Firm's Sales Growth Has Been Kicking."

From 8/13/10 to 9/03/10 its color code was green while it struggled but remained on the Featured Stocks list. Its color code was changed to yellow again after it showed resilience, and on 9/15/10 the new pivot point cited was adjusted down slightly to its 7/30/10 plus ten cents. Interestingly, had that minor adjustment not been made, it would not have cleared its "pivot point" until it tallied today's gain - which was backed by only +28% above average volume! Keep in mind that the objective of our ongoing analysis is to determine when a stock has built a sound base pattern and risen clear of resistance with great volume conviction behind meaningful price gains. Usually, greater volume conviction has been behind he market's biggest winners, and it was rather obvious at the beginning of a substantial leg up that the stocks were under institutional accumulation. Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above their prior chart highs, and they always limit losses if a stock falls more than 7-8% from its purchase price.

Sales revenues have shown impressive sequential acceleration and it has shown strong earnings. The high-ranked Apparel firm's quarterly earnings increases have been well above the +25% guideline, satisfying the C criteria. Its annual earnings history (A criteria) since FY '07 has been good. The number of top-rated funds owning an interest in its shares rose from 85 in Sept '09 to 102 in June '10, which is a very reassuring sign with respect to the I criteria.
