Major Indices Rallied into Long Holiday Weekend
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted a gain and closed at its high for the day, setting a new record. A late surge of buying also sent the S&P 500 near its best-ever close. Volume reported was mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by almost a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and by a 5-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 80 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 77 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals expanded and outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices are in a confirmed uptrend (M criteria). Disciplined investors know that new buying efforts are only to be made in stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is consolidating near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
All 11 S&P 500 sectors finished higher with gains ranging from +0.3% (energy) to +1.9% (consumer discretionary). The market helped by earnings reports from Dell (DELL +4.3%), Marvell (MRVL +9.2%), and MongoDB (MDB +18.3%). Amazon (AMZN +3.7%), Tesla (TSLA +3.8%), and NVIDIA (NVDA +1.5%) also helped create a positive bias.
Freah economic news that left the market oriented toward a soft landing for the economy and a rate cut at the September FOMC meeting. The Personal Income and Spending Report for July showed personal income up 0.3%, personal spending up 0.5%. The PCE Price Index and core-PCE Price Index both wereup 0.2%, which kept their year-over-year changes steady at 2.5% and 2.6%, respectively.
The 2-yr note yield rose four basis points to 3.93%. The 10-yr note yield also jumped four basis points to 3.91%.

Granite Contruction Closes at All-Time High
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Granite Construction (GVA +$1.16 or +1.57% to $75.16) had light volume behind a gain for another new all-time high close. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($66.89) defines inital support to watch on pullbacks above prior highs in the $64 area.
GVA was highlighted on the 6/11/24 mid-day report as it was noted that a valid secondary buy point exists up to +5% above the recent high after finding support at its 10 WMA line following a prior breakout. It was last shown in this FSU section on 7/31/24 with an annotated graph under the headline "Hit New High While Making Steady Progress".
Granite Construction has a 94 Earnings Per Share Rating. It reported solid earnings increases backed by accelerating sales revenues growth in the Jun, Sep, Dec '23, Mar and Jun '24 quarters versus the year ago periods. Annual earnings growth has been strong and steady.
GVA hails from the Bldg-Heavy Construction group which is currently ranked 25th on the 197 Industry Groups list (L criteria). It has a small supply of only 43.2 million shares outstanding (S criteria) which can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 401 in Jun '23 to 415 in Jun '24. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.6 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days.
