Indices Were Mixed With Lighter Volume Totals
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mixed on Monday. The Dow lost 27 points to 18404. The S&P 500 slipped 2 points to 2170. The Nasdaq climbed 22 points to 5184. The benchmark S&P 500 Index, the S&P 400 Mid Cap, and the S&P 600 Small Cap Index each hit new record highs on Friday. Big gains for the major indices were noted in prior commentaries and that bullish action signaled a new "confirmed uptrend" for the market (M criteria). Volume totals were lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE while the mix was even on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 60 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 65 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average suffered a 6th consecutive small loss while consolidating near record highs.
The major averages fluctuated during the first trading day of August. Gains in Technology and Health Care were countered by widespread weakness in the Energy sector. Apple (AAPL +1.77%) posted a gain. Biogen (BIIB +4.10%) rose following positive trial results for its joint venture muscle drug treatment. Shares of Exxon (XOM -3.47%) fell in sympathy with a decline in oil prices. Diamond Offshore (DO -7.66%) fell on its cautious outlook for the drilling industry after posting quarterly results above consensus estimates. On the economic front, the Institute for Supply Management said U.S. manufacturing activity expanded by less than projected in July with a reading of 52.6. A separate release revealed construction spending unexpectedly fell 0.6% in June, compared to a forecasted 0.5% gain. In M&A news, Tesla (TSLA -2.04%) reached an agreement to buy Solar City (SCTY -7.42%) for $2.6 billion while GPS tracking company Fleetmatics (FLTX +38.71%) accepted a $2.4 billion offer from Verizon Communications (VZ -1.64%). Treasuries lost ground with the Benchmark 10-year off 15/32 to yield 1.50%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude dropped another 3.9% to $39.38/barrel. COMEX gold added 0.2% at $1352.20/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.2% with particular strength against the yen.

Perched Above "Max Buy" Level Following Volume-Driven Gain
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Fortune Brands Home & Security Inc (FBHS +$0.33 or +0.52% to $63.60) is consolidating just above its "max buy" level. Volume was +66% above average on 7/28/16 triggering a technical buy signal while hitting new highs after gapping up. Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above prior highs.
It reported earnings +39% on +11% sales revenues for the Jun '16 quarter. The high-ranked Building - Construction Products firm showed encouraging earnings acceleration in sequential quarters, up +16%, +23%, +27% and +39% in the Jun, Sep, Dec '15 and Mar '16 quarters, respectively. The larger than +25% increases (C criteria) helped it better match with the fact-based investment system's fundamental guidelines.
FBHS currently has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B. It was first highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 4/21/16 high plus 10 cents. It was last shown in this FSU section on 7/11/16 with an annotated graph under the headline, "New Highs Lack Important Institutional Volume Punch". The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 805 in Sep '15 to 933 in Jun '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
