Market Rose With Lighter Volume Totals
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow and S&P 500 both advanced +0.3%, while the NASDAQ fell less than -0.1%. Stocks finished higher on Thursday. The Dow climbed 65 points to 17,763. The S&P 500 advanced 7 points to 2,066. The NASDAQ gained 6 points to 4,886. The volume totals were reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals. Advancers led decliners by nearly a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and by almost a 3-2 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 51 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 29 stocks. The list of new 52-week highs expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 10 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' endured recent distributional pressure which put the rally under pressure, however, their remains a healthy level of leadership (stocks hitting new 52-week highs). New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is still below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
The major averages rose amid mixed economic data ahead of Friday's non-farm payrolls report. Jobless claims last week unexpectedly fell 20,000 to 268,000. In March, the trade deficit shrank to $35.4 billion and a gauge of factory orders for February unexpectedly advanced.
At the close, nine of the 10 S&P 500 sectors finished higher. Consumer discretionary was up the most. CarMax (KMX +9.27%) rallied on a strong earnings report, while Macy's (M +3.67%) rose on positive forward guidance. In staples, Lorillard (LO +2.76%) and Reynolds (RAI +4.35%) rose amid speculation that their proposed merger would get antitrust approval. Tech was the lone sector lower as Microsoft (MSFT -1.06%) and Qualcomm (QCOM -2.10%) both fell.
Treasuries backed and filled before the labor report tomorrow. The 10-year note declined 15/32 to yield 1.91%.
Commodities were mixed as WTI crude lost 1.2% to $49.47/barrel but natural gas surged +4% to $2.71/MMBtu on increased demand. COMEX gold retreated 0.6% to $1,201.40/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar slid 0.6% with the euro up 1.1% to $1.0879/EUR and the yen virtually unchanged at ¥119.72/USD.

Encountered Distributional Pressure Following Breakout Lacking Volume
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Reis Inc (REIS +$0.62 or +2.42% to $26.24) posted a gain on higher (near average) volume today. Recent action was noted as distributional pressure as it suffered a big loss on 5 times average volume on 3/31/15. It hit a new 52-week high and rallied above its pivot point on the prior session, but the volume was only +28% above average. Members were reminded - "Gains above the pivot point must have at least +40% above average volume to trigger a convincing technical buy signal." Pyramiding is a tactic taught in the Certification that allows investors to let market action help to dictate entries and weighting into each new position purchased.
REIS was last shown in this FSU section with annotated graphs on 3/16/15 under the headline, "Found Support at Long-Term Average and Fundamentals Are Good", after highlighted in yellow in the mid-day (read here).
It found support at its 200-day moving average (DMA) line during its consolidation. It had earnings increases above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) and sales revenues improving in the Mar, Jun, Sep, and Dec '14 quarterly comparisons. Annual earnings (A criteria) history has been improving steadily since FY '10.
The high-ranked Real Estate Development/Operations firm has an Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 which is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 117 in Mar '14 to 150 in Dec '14, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
