Major Averages Finished Mixed Awaiting Fed Statement
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mixed on Tuesday. The Dow lost 128 points to 17,849. The S&P 500 fell 7 points to 2,074. . The volume totals were reported mixed, lighter on the NYSE and slightly higher on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session totals.. Breadth was even as advancers led decliners by a narrow margin on the Nasdaq exchange and decliners edged out advancers on the NYSE. Leadership contracted as there were 62 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 93 stocks. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 7 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Monday's expansion in leadership boded well for the market outlook. Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' uptrend recently came under pressure, and members were reminded that any sustained rally for the major averages requires a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The NASDAQ Composite Index bucked the trend and rose 7 points to 4,937.
The major averages pared losses as gains in technology helped offset weakness in commodity producers. At the close, nine of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 were lower. Materials stocks were off the most, as DuPont (DD -3.10%) extended losses and LyondellBasell (LYB -0.8%). Consumer staples were another sore spot. Procter & Gamble (PG -0.85%) as the company tries to spin-off its beauty products arm. Tech was the lone sector higher as Apple (AAPL +1.67%) and Facebook (FB +1.66%) rose.
Economic data was on the back burner, as most investors await Janet Yellen's statement tomorrow after the Fed's two-day meeting ends. A measure of new home starts in February was held back by harsh winter weather. However, a gauge of building permits for February advanced more than projected.
Treasuries fluctuated ahead of Wednesday's Fed speak. The 10-year note gained 5/32 to yield 2.05%. On the short end of the curve, the two-year note fell 1/32 to yield 0.67%.
Commodities were mostly lower. WTI crude lost 1.7% to $43.12/brl. while gold declined -0.5% to $1,147.80/oz. The dollar erased losses, losing less than -0.1%. The euro gained +0.2% to $1.0592/EUR and the yen was virtually unchanged at ¥121.37/USD.

Financials Rose While Retail, Tech, and Commodity-Linked Groups Fell
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Financial shares had a positive bias as the Bank Index ($BKX +0.22%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.29%) both rose on Tuesday. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.48%) was a negative influence and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.74%) and Networking Index ($NWX -0.60%) both lost ground, meanwhile the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.13%) eked out a small gain. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.69%) was a standout decliner and energy-related shares had a negative bias as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.60%) outpaced the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.11%) to the downside.

Found Support Near Prior Highs and 50-Day Moving Average Line
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Jones Lang Lasalle Inc (JLL +$0.32 or +0.20% to $160.78) has been consolidating above prior highs in the $154 area and its 50-day moving average (DMA) line which recently acted as support. Subsequent losses below the recent low ($153.42 on 3/11/15) would raise greater concerns and trigger a technical sell signal. It was last shown in this FSU section on 2/25/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Wedged Above Prior Highs Getting Extended", while rising above its "max buy" level.
On 2/05/15 it finished strong with +251% above average volume behind its gain for a new 52-week high (N criteria) after gapping up. It was highlighted in yellow in the 2/03/15 mid-day report (read here) and noted - "Has the look of a valid Secondary Buy point up to +5% above prior highs."
JLL reported Dec '14 earnings +29% on +16% sales revenues, above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) for the 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison versus the year ago periods. That helped provide a reassurance, fundamentally, and it appeared to form a base-on-base type pattern after a breakout in mid-December which came after noted with caution in the 12/02/14 mid-day report, "Patient investors may watch for a new base or secondary buy point to possibly develop and be noted in the weeks ahead."
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 513 in Mar '14 to 671 in Dec '14, which is a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 43.9 million shares in the public float contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
