Breadth Negative as Major Averages Fell
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow lost -0.6%, the S&P finished -0.9% lower and the NASDAQ declined -1.1%. Stocks finished Friday lower. The S&P 500 declined 12 points to 2,053. The NASDAQ was off 21 points to 4,871. The volume total on the NYSE was higher than the prior session while volume on the Nasdaq exchange was near the prior session total. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by more than a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and by about 9-5 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership contracted as there were 42 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 55 stocks. New 52-week lows outnumbered new 52-week highs on the NYSE yet new highs outnumbered new lows on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 5 of the 12 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, the major averages' uptrend has recently come under pressure. Any sustained rally for the major averages requires a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs. It would not bode well for the market outlook if new 52-week highs continue to contract and the new 52-week lows list expands. New buying efforts should only be made in stocks meeting all of the fundamental and technical guidelines the fact-based investment system. Meanwhile, stand ready to take swift action if any stocks you own trigger any worrisome technical sell signals.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 145 points to 17,749 on Friday. It saw slighly above average volume behind recent losses as it slumped below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
The major averages retreated as the dollar strengthened and oil prices slid lower. In economic data, a measure of producer prices for February unexpectedly fell -0.5% amid oil price declines. For March, a preliminary reading of consumer confidence slumped to a four-month low versus estimates for a slight gain.
At the close, all 10 S&P 500 sectors were lower. Industrials and utilities weighed on the index the most. United Technologies (UTX -2.1%), despite announcing a $2.2 billion share buyback, while General Electric (GE -1.4%) fell. In utilities, Duke Energy (DUK -0.9%) edged lower. Materials also lagged, as Freeport McMoRan (FCX -4%) sank. Herbalife (HLF +8.2%) was a bright spot that gained amid reports that Bill Ackman may have manipulated the stock's price.
Treasuries fluctuated around break-even. The 10-year note declined 1/32 to yield 2.12%.
Commodities were mixed. WTI crude tumbled -4% to $45.14/brl., but COMEX gold advanced +0.2% to $1,154.50/oz. In FOREX, the dollar gained +0.8%. The euro fell -1.4% to $1.0482/EUR and adding to the -3.3% weekly loss. The yen dropped -0.1% to ¥121.40/USD.

Extended From Base After Completing New Public Offering
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Actavis plc (ACT +$0.32 or +0.11% to $298.95) is perched at its all-time high, extended from its prior base. It completed a new Public Offering on 2/25/15. Recently it reported Dec '14 earnings +23%, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) of the fact-based investment system, raising some fundamental concerns.
Like any stock, on pullbacks it is important to watch how it acts near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($279.18). It found prompt support near its 50 DMA line earlier. More damaging losses leading to a violation could trigger a technical sell signal. It was last shown in this FSU section on 2/24/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Perched At High it Proposed a New Public Offering".
The Medical - Generic Drugs industry group currently has a 99 Group Relative Strength Rating. Leadership from other issues in the group is a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria. The group had an 81 rating when it was shown in this FSU section on 12/29/14 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Formed New Base Above Prior Highs and 50-Day Moving Average". ACT was first highlighted in yellow in the 6/20/14 mid-day report (read here) with a pivot point based on its 2/26/14 high plus 10 cents. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has also been strong. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares has been on the rise, up from 1,219 in Sep '13 to 1,984 in Dec '14, and its Up/Down Volume ratio of 1.4 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days, reassuring signs concerning the I criteria.
